Unwinnable subscribers saw an excerpt of this last month, but here's the much, much longer convo I had with Autumn back in December about cultural criticism, my process, and a long, ongoing battle with alienation from my own taste and craft. A little rambly, apologies

"The story of the Knight and the Witch always ends in tragedy."

Tasha Suri's The Isle in the Silver Sea is a lush exploration of immigration, assimilation, and storytelling. Read @bookjockeyalex.bsky.social's review:
Heart-Pounding Action and Heart-Stopping Romance: The Isle in the Silver Sea by Tasha Suri - Reactor
"Tasha Suri isn’t just exploring stories here, but mythology and mythmaking as well."

The thing about ebooks as a substitute is that it ignores two major needs of teen readers: autonomy (the ability to get a book without going through parents) and community (the ability to pass a book around to all their friends.)
I've said this before but I truly believe we could revitalize YA and kidlit overnight by switching to MMPB and paperback first. Kids want paperbacks! It is by far the biggest request I get from teen readers.
hello this is the official petition to bring back mass market paperbacks!! mmpbs are good actually and everyone should do them!! i think esp romantasy readers would really love that shit! and you can still spray those edges!!! bring back mass market paperbacks thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our society is so allergic to showing gender non-conformity that even with characters that are known for that non-conformity, there's often a "remedial" confirmation of gender roles in other ways for that character, as if to "make up" for it.

Even if that non-conformity is shown as heroic.
I wish Eowyn didn't have to get a boyfriend, I wish Ripley didn't have to get boyfriends in ALIENS and ALIEN 3, I wish Starbuck didn't have boyfriends, I wish Brienne of Tarth didn't end the series crying over a dude, not because I oppose love, but because they're all being so obviously De-Lesbianed

Sam Langsdale’s book “Searching for Feminist Superheroes: Gender, Sexuality, and Race in Marvel Comics” won the Charles Hatfield Book Prize from the Comics Studies Society. While many books about representation catalog problematic elements, Langsdale searches for progressive alternatives. 1/8
