Random MGD TL thoughts. I'm pretty happy with "Oh! You're a--oh!" The JP's "Oh...! Y-you're a magical girl!" But this wouldn't have fit the best in the bubble. It's fun to use real speech quirks like this to imply meaning.

Holy shit, just learned about the typewriter art of Montserrat Alberich Escardívol, a Catalan typist. Using an extra wide typewriter and 180 color ribbons, she built up elaborate images from simple characters like 'm' and '.' and ';'. Here is her typewritten painting of the Cathedral of Barcelona.

I LEARNED THE ANSWER TO THIS

Chris's Steakhouse was a New Orleans landmark

Chris Matulich periodically got bored, sold it, waited for the new owner to fail, and bought it back cheap

The sale conditions: Can't move it, can't change the name

He did this six times

Then he sold it to Ruth Fertel
what did ruth mean when she said her steakhouse was "chris"

A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

I have some friends who really desperately need to hear this. You do what you can and you make a difference where you can and that's *way* better than giving up because you can't fix it all

Little fixes are how you get to the big fixes, and they're worthwhile on their own too
I think my motto for the rest of the year is going to be "it fixes what it fixes."

Making dinner, finishing Chapter 5 revisions, doing my volunteer work: the fact that it doesn't fix EVERYTHING doesn't mean that it fixes NOTHING. The middle ground, where things fix what they fix, is where we live.

Spotted these beauties convening for lunch today. Three of them sipped away intently, gently opening and closing their wings in the warm sun. They were so content that they let me get quite close, and take multiple photos from several angles. A delightful moment of wonder in the middle of my day.

Overnight temps are starting to approach freezing in Aomori, though we’re still a ways off from winter. When seeing my son off to school this morning, there was frost on the farm field down the road from us.

There are so many reasons why "people have to work in order to deserve to eat" is fucked up, but this is one of the big ones
As SNAP programs are cut nationwide, it amazes me how many people are saying, "Good. They'll have to get off their asses and work if they want to eat," completely ignoring the 11,000,000 disabled people on those programs who would absolutely love to be out working, but can't. Where is your empathy?

have faith in your own experiences and interpretations!!! let your personal experience of something have meaning, as opposed to trying to find the “correct” meaning
please watch movies and read books and play games and look at art, please view it with your own eyes through a lens you made yourself and not just through video essayists and ending explained videos please im begging you

An old friend came back to Japan for a visit, and he asked if we could do a little hike on Mt Hashikami, for old time's sake. It was a grey day, but the views from the top were still impressive, and the mountain offered many quiet moments of beauty. Had a wondertul time!

My next stop is home! Hopefully the flights won’t be too bad🤞

In addition to these adventures, I checked out the Museum of Contemporary Art, saw the new Frankenstein at the tiff Lightbox, and otherwise had a great time hanging out with my friend! It’s been a real blast spending time in Toronto.

Later in the day, I walked my way around The Path - an underground series of passages running through Toronto, with lots of shops and connections to subway stations, as well as other specific locations.

I also walked through a nice park, where I could really appreciate the autumn colors.

I spent some time wandering the city today, and ran into the route of the Toronto marathon. Would’ve been great to see my friend compete, as was the original plan, but it was still fun to cheer on participants for a bit.

I may not have gotten a lot of exciting adventure photos, but yesterday was a great day spending time with an old friend. I expect today will be more of the same!

I got to spend another great day with my Canadian friend yesterday, where we explored some nice cafes and other in Toronto. Towards the end of the day, we headed over to this new park. It was beautiful!

It took me a while to get settled in, but now I’m all set at an airport hotel, and I had a great time hanging out with another old friend. It already feels like the trip’s been worth it, though I’m currently about as badly jet lagged as it feels like I can be.

After I finally did make it to the airport, everything went smoothly. The flight itself landed about an hour ahead of schedule (which seems to happen a lot on my return trips from Japan), and so I arrived, exhausted, in Canada.
