It's Hayao Miyazaki's 85th birthday, which led me to write at @crooked-marquee.bsky.social about the strange legacy his films have left behind in the States, driven as much by hideous AI as by an excess of merchandising: crookedmarquee.com/miyazaki-at-...

There was a period where I cited Miyazaki's Nausicaä as a personal hero figure. The story's sense of deep history, the conflicts driven by characters with understandable motivations, the beautiful and terrifying setting, and Nausicaä's own courage and moral focus: both movie and manga are great.

Hayao Miyazaki has done a lot of great movies, but I want to shout out the manga of Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind. Dude did ONE* comic in his life, and it was one of the greatest comics of all time.
*(I believe he has actually drawn others, but not many, and I don’t think they’re in English)

Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (Hayao Miyazaki, 1979; Toho/TMS) - 8/10

Never seen any of the Lupin III stuff, but I was curious about this one for quite sometime since this was the directorial debut of Hayao Miyazaki, and it ended up being a great start for him
