From the excellent and regrettably not-on-here Simon Saradzhyan:

I first listened to Black Sabbath when I was 6 or so - my much elder brothers, dressed in bell bottoms and sporting long hair at the time, played some of the early numbers on massive Soviet-made reel-to-reel tape recorder "Astra.”

This. This. This.
This is a good summary, but again, I am frustrated with the focus on Medicaid as the lead talking point for public health agencies around OBBBA. There are numerous other impacts to public health in this bill, are there not? Why aren’t we talking about those?

this is also, btw, to ride one of my minor hobby horses, an example of why "emp weapons" aren't a thing. you can't get predictable effects, for one thing, and for another it is a nuclear attack and the response to zapping a few light switches will be a massive unpleasant response

Ben Franklin would be on Pornhub within literal minutes.
I think if you grabbed any famous thinker from centuries ago and showed them Wikipedia and told them it was free for anyone to access, they would say it is humanity's crowning achievement and would be indifferent to the moon landings, modern medicine, flight, or anything else you showed them

There's a new U.S. nuclear weapon in the inventory. Understand that this is a weapon meant to be used during a regional conflict.

Joe Nye was truly a gentleman, scholar, and a political science legend.
I am shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of my colleague Joseph Nye, who recruited me to Harvard a quarter-century ago. He was a highly accomplished scholar, an innovative Dean, and a devoted public servant. Also a very decent and humane man, who will be missed at Harvard and beyond.

👏 the 👏 Mc 👏 Rib 👏
The NYT wants you to think universities became dependent on government. This is false.

The government invested in the national research infrastructure by competitive grants to universities. The taxpayers built this. It got us to the moon. Won the Cold War. Created Silicon Valley. Made the McRib.
