Great piece by Zadie Smith. When the right talks about classics or "Western" culture, these works are only important to the extent that it demonstrates their superiority, they have no interest in art in and of itself beyond that www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Apropos of a conversation I’m having literally right now
People often push the disabled to take risks with our health.

They think if it’s already “that bad” who cares if it gets worse

We care.

Our baselines mean everything to us.

Whatever limited function we have left is always worth protecting.

You don’t get it until you get it.

Cat at Fireside

Clara, Clara, carissime mea,
Curled there at the hearth,
As must all the earth,
You fold to sun —
This true, not that false one,
That lately was seen in glass depicted.

It’s sad that so many people reject country music because it’s associated with brainless conservatism. Kris Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar. These people are clear sighted American folk music outlaws.
Will just leave this clip here of Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings talking about what’s wrong with America from a 1991 interview and it’s still all very true today

Unforgivable
Reporter: A video of a raid from Los Angeles, look inside this car. They took a US citizen father out and left a toddler in the backseat. Two heavily armed border patrol agents got in that car and drove the child and the vehicle away.

“Nothing has improved.” More than 220 killed since the big PR rollout of the “ceasefire.”

As was feared and, sadly, all too predictable.

Wow
We shouldn’t need a blood test to Stop the Stigma of chronic illness, but I’m grateful one has been discovered.
Science is catching up to what those who’s suffer have long known:

We can’t try harder.
We aren’t faking.
We aren’t gaming the system.

ME/CFS & Long Covid are real & debilitating.
Well, this is some good news.

Not nothing, what isn’t,
But buzzing in thickets,
Trickling, thrushes, crickets;
Aught thence approximate.

It’s not only that the 2025 text sounds like the 1925 one; the parallels in syntax and thought suggest a direct borrowing.
"The Right in 2025 Sounds a Lot Like the Nazis in 1925"

Today’s far right may know it’s wrong to talk about a “superior race,” so it just frames it as a “superior culture” instead:

There are so many hurdles to proper care 😩 You’re lucky if your doctor knows what POTS is, much less how to treat it, but then they ALSO need to know POTS is often comorbid with ME, which makes the standard physical therapy contraindicated. Even this NBA star is likely not in good hands

I don’t even wish this s*** on a Boston Celtic.
In all seriousness, I wish KP health and recovery.
Reports that Boston Celtics star Kristaps Porzingis likely has Long COVID or a similar post-viral illness.

This has reduced his ability to play and is a major reason why the Celtics are losing playoff games.

We need to break the stigma around Long COVID. It can affect everyone.

I have POTS, a common Long Covid symptom.

Also, my insurance has just deemed that the moderately effective drug I take to control it is no longer covered.
It’s POTS awareness day—a blood flow problem common after Covid.

POTS can be subtle—I often wonder how many people who feel rundown, anxious or distracted have this treatable condition.

Main criteria is heart rate going up >30bpm when going from laying down to standing—smthg you can check at home!

For folks asking if they've made it *inside* a Home Depot yet as the business has clearly just continued letting agents do whatever they want in their lots, the answer is yes. This is from yesterday in Evanston.
