BEACH - DAY Sun shines on a pristine beach. White sand greets the gentle lapping of rhythmic waves as a few BEACHCOMBERS splash through them, collecting shells. On the touristy boardwalk, a VENDOR opens their kiosk and sets out tacky wares. Painted conch shells and sand dollars with SARASOTA painted in rainbow letters; sarongs and tropical-themed towels, and finally-THUNK! A gaudy VELVET PAINTING of a long-haired, bare-chested MAN with a dolphin body from the navel down. The price tag is $200. The vendor scrutinizes the painting, marks it down to $100. With a satisfied nod, he continues setting up shop. But this isn't his story.... Past the boardwalk, down the street, up a block, then over a few more rests a stucco office buildings where a sign reads SUNSHINE PROPERTIES, LLC. A dolphin sun catcher dangles in the open window of the second story, casting colorful light into-INT. CRAMPED OFFICE - DAY The ocean waves echo through the open window, the ledge lined with a dozen different dolphin figurines. They twinkle in the morning sunlight, prized possessions. The rest of the office is stacks of papers, boxes, open files-- and seated at the center of it all, is MAGGIE (30s). She's a quiet, earnest person who is trying her darnedest to live outside her comfort zone. She eats Chinese takeout from the box, pauses to excitedly crack open her fortune cookie. She eagerly reads in her distinct, Midwest accent: MAGGIE There are no accidents when it comes to true love... yeah, right.

Multiple friends have been impacted by colon cancer. It's easy to get screened. It's not the greatest party in the world, but it beats the hell out of dying from something you very very easily could have ID'd at usefully early moment.

INT. OFFICE - NIGHT A cramped cubicle farm. Nothing but the sound of buzzing computers until-- CRASH! A broom clatters to the floor. OLIVIA (O.C.) Shit! OLIVIA GERING (30s) crouches under a desk, covers her mouth. Dressed in all black with a backpack tucked between her legs, its obvious television is the only primer she's had for this kind of stunt. But she's too committed to quit now. She pushes back her sleeve, checks the time. The glowing EXIT sign is the only light until-- CLICK! The door opens, and a flashlight beam slices across the room. Cubicles. Monitors. A lone beach babe calendar. The SECURITY GUARD holding the flashlight chuckles. He lowers the light, just misses Olivia in her hiding spot. She curls up, then tries to make herself smaller... The Security Guard's boots stop in front of Olivia's eyes, the light on the floor in front of her at the fallen broom. SECURITY GUARD Stupid. He picks the broom up and leans it back against the wall. He takes two steps before it falls back to the ground. He rolls his eyes and pulls a radio from his pocket. SECURITY GUARD (CONT'D) Level Four, looks like it was a fucking broom. "Smart cameras" my ass... you want a coffee? He saunters back into the hallway and disappears. Olivia peeks out from her hiding spot, then makes a run for it. LAST LAUGH, a feature by Leah Simmons Image of a woman and man in black and white facing opposite ways, he to the right and she to the left, text of title over torn red paper. What Readers Have to Say-- “That was badass. Didn’t see anything coming and honestly thought her situation was hopeless... You are incredibly talented. The script is tight with some good subtleties sprinkled around for good measure.” “Awesome, twisted concept. The game of cat and mouse between Olivia and Josh is loaded with tension...Super engaging read.” “This is a fantastic read! And very tightly written.You've got a solid, really imaginative, page-turner here!”

Less distant now... ELLIS (O.S.) I'm ruined! God dammit, I'm ruined! The sound of fast-paced footsteps approaches Leyland. A hand squeezes Leyland's necktie. Yanks his floppy head up. ELLIS (late 50s, smooth tanned face placed between a FEDORA and a HAWAIIAN SHIRT) has a maniacal look in his eyes. ELLIS (CONT'D) Wakey, wakey, you son of a bitch! Ellis backhands Leyland. SMACK! Leyland jolts awake. LEYLAND Aye! I'm awake! I'm awake! Leyland gazes up at Ellis. Concerned. LEYLAND (CONT'D) You okay, Ellis? Everything good? ELLIS You've ruined me, asshole! LEYLAND Wh-what happened? ELLIS Unbelievable! Ellis releases the tie. Leyland's head clunks to the dirt. ELLIS (CONT'D) Leyland fucking happened! Ellis paces. Turns and kicks dirt at Leyland. Leyland heaves himself up off the ground. He winces. Groans. A pile of smouldering rubble sits where Dough Re Meat once stood. In Leyland's terms: It's a goner. Leyland locks eyes with the destruction. LEYLAND Oh, no! No, no! Ellis, this isn't my work. You need to get out. This past year has been nothing but scorched earth for you! Ellis lets out a hopeless laugh. ELLIS (CONT'D) There's nothing but smoke and rubble behind you. The pile of smoke and rubble smoulders behind Leyland. Leyland fails to understand. LEYLAND You know I can't do that. It's all I got! Ever since -- ELLIS Horse shit! I got out of it and was doing fucking great until you ruined it! You need to find something to do and someone else to latch on to because I'm done! LEYLAND You have insurance, right? Ellis, please tell me -- Ellis winds up and PUNCHES Leyland in the face. Leyland crumples to the ground. He whimpers. Ellis looms over him. ELLIS I might not be a god-fearing man, but that doesn't mean I welcome the Devil at my doorstep. The page ends.
