Why no pronouns? I began writing online when Usenet was a thing. I have always appreciated that online my ideas mattered more than my identity. I maintain that ethos by keeping this, my primary account, free of my gender, race and ethnicity. If you need pronouns for this account, use ze/zir.
The peasants are worried about Healthcare and jobs again. DISTRACT! DISTRACT! DISTRACT! 🚨🚨🚨
Good to see: @repyassansari.bsky.social tells me she expects 50 Republicans to vote to release Epstein files (agreeing w/MTG). Dems also want to bring in heads of financial institutions on Epstein transactions.

"The dam is breaking," Ansari says. Listen to her here:

Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Fresh Epstein Bombshell Should Unnerve Trump
As signs mount that more Republicans than expected will break with Trump on Jeffrey Epstein, Rep. Yassamin Ansari explains why Trump has much more to worry about than is commonly known.

Right wing fascists would have us believe that hatred of Netanyahu and his government is antisemitic. It isn't, any more than hatred of Trump and his catch-farts is hatred of all Americans. Evil should be called out wherever it appears.

Here you go.

It’s a problem with that acronym, because almost everything works for both referents

“Lately SF has lost all sense of realism.”
“I know. And it has so few women.”
“It boils down to SF is obsessed with gadgets, and especially with AI.”
“And don’t get me started on BART delays.”
“Wait what”

So laws requiring them to use deadnames and assigned-at-birth pronouns are also unconstitutional, right? Right?

"Look, Mamdani's win is both the worst thing to ever happen and totally meaningless; his supporters are stupid rich kids and also dedicated communist-terrorist infiltrators; and, as I argue in this, my 12th op-ed on him, it's strange that we all keep talking about him so much."

Tuesday Zohran Mamdani convincingly wins NYC Mayoral race. This means that by next week Gavin Newsom will have grown a beard and be promoting free busses and rent freezes in California.

Exactly this. We just haven’t been given great candidates because the DNC won’t open their treasure chest for them. It’s been going on for decades and the main reason we’re in this pickle now.

If you aren't seeing skeets from some of your fave people, they might have been labeled "Rude" by bsky mods. Idk what they are thinking, I don't need a mommy to tell me who to be buddies with. Anyway, go into Settings > moderation > bluesky moderation (advanced) and turn Rude off.

I think this is in some ways the most encouraging thing for me from last night

they really went national full court press to beat Mamdani and they got what they wanted - Republicans showed up, held their noses and voted for Cuomo, the anti-Mamdani coalition worked

they still lost by 9
while the story in Virginia and New Jersey was heavily one of relative turnout, with far more votes than usual coming from liberal areas, this was not the case in New York

Republicans showed up in pretty clearly greater numbers than Democrats, motivated to beat Mamdani

but they didn't

This is what happens with means tested programs. They bread resentment in those who still struggle but don't qualify. SNAP is also highly inefficient spending more on admin that it distributed in aid. A Universal Basic Income would solve both these problems.

I like how Zohran Mamdani scandals are like "He called his old cousin his aunt one time" and Andrew Cuomo scandals are like "He sexually assaulted 13 women."

We live in a country where the media is focused more on who a Democratic mayoral candidate defines as his ‘aunt’ than on the DHS Twitter account putting out white nationalist propaganda and replying to Nazis online.

Reagan's approach to the world prominently featured two things:

1) Russian aggression bad, Western democratic alliance good
2) Free trade good, tariffs and other barriers to trade bad

Pretending it's the opposite is the sort of reality inversion only someone who rejects truth itself could buy.

I know we shouldn't invest too much in one political candidate. But I can't help but see Mamdani as a living, breathing counterexample to everything that's wrecked our current politics. I wish him nothing but success, because I feel like his success might become ours too.

Frodo wakes. ‘Where am I?’

‘In the House of Elrond. It is ten o’clock in the morning. The morning of October the twenty-fourth, if you want to know.’

‘Gandalf!’

‘Yes, I am here. And you are lucky to be here, too, after all the absurd things you have done since you left home.’

I don't hear this. Organized people have change they want to see, and a strategy for demanding that change. All I hear are a bunch of angry voice without any plan to actual alter course. Please someone show me I'm wrong.

What we are dissatisfied with are all the anti-democratic stuff governments started doing during the pandemic and have just kept going.
I submit that a huge part of the pandemic of distrust is that reactionaries & progressives the world over are both dissatisfied with democracy, for different reasons, but this creates a pervasive common sense (via incompletely theorized agreement) that democracy's in crisis.

Will I get a good income out of doing a PhD? Of course not.

But will I at least also find a stable job that allows me to pursue my research? Also no.

But will I at least be happy doing what I like? Hahaha also no.

Sounds like a terrible career. Where can I find the application?
