Sh*t's goin' down in Boston, and the Devil deals the cards.

In the pocket of Big Dame.

Wo aber Gefahr ist, wächst das Rettende auch.

I'm telling myself this is the bit where it looks as if all is lost but the heroes persevere.
Never mind telling me how often someone's been blocked or how much they post, I want a labeler that tells me if someone who can't stop posting about US politics is in fact a citizen of Ireland or Canada or, like, New Zealand.

"I will never vote for so-and-so" no shit you can't vote here anyway.

Happy Year of the Horse

When my Mom's Mom was a little girl she had erysipelas & was in the hospital in the same room as a baby who had it. She never saw anyone come to visit the baby so she used to hold her & sing to her & try to comfort her, & then the baby died & my great-grandmother took my Gram home to nurse her there

We had Dumpling Daughter for Lunar New Year! (And it was a feast so it also works for Mardi Gras.)

Good news! My Mom was having sciatic pain all weekend & I found some arnica gel when I was decluttering & it has helped!

Sometimes alternative medicine helps & then you call it medicine.

I must be doing *something* right: my colleague came & showed me some pictures of his cat of his own volition!

Maybe I'm struggling so badly because my French genes have caught up with me?

My half-sister believes parts of the Grand Canyon are off-limits so people don't find out about the energy pyramids it contains.
there’s a whole different America out there posting on Threads

This reminded me of how Captain Corcoran, a man born into the working class & switched with a rich kid as a baby, is demoted to Able Seaman at the end of "Pinafore" but has worked his way back up to Captain & picked up a knighthood on the way by "Utopia, Limited".

Gilbert was making a point here.
You're highly invested in this because it's your current way of life that gave you (a man of common birth but a naval genius) the opportunity to command a ship

Vaccines are genuine bona fide miracles, and destroying a miracle is a grave sin, yet that is what our country is dead set on doing.

RIP Robert Duvall, when you played Boo Radley you looked a lot like my oldest half-brother did when *he* was a young man.

Well, I mopped the kitchen floor & vacuumed the living room & got my Mom out for a walk & ran the "clean washer" cycle on the, er, washer.

Part of my reluctance to run Car Errands is that the piles of snow have made everyone's driving Worse & it's making me anxious.
Saruman vacuums the living room!
The Comte de Rochefort takes his car in for the recommended yearly service!
King Haggard goes through Yelp until he finds a reliable & competent plumber!
The Duc de Richleau drops his donations off at the charity shop!
Mycroft Holmes goes for his mammogram!

The birds have come back, which means I need to spray Pine-Sol on the house with my trusty water gun, which means I've been singing "The Woman with the Pine-Sol Gun".

It's a pity I can't jolly myself into doing *more* domestic tasks by pretending to be Sir Christopher Lee.

This is making me want never to buy anything again.
(1/11) If you live in NY, you’ve probably started seeing a new warning: “THIS PRICE WAS SET BY AN ALGORITHM USING YOUR PERSONAL DATA.” This mandatory disclosure went into effect late last year, and it’s the first attempt by a US state to grapple with a new generation of surveillance pricing.

Offering a public healthcare option would, I suspect, be like re-introducing wolves to Yellowstone in terms of widespread good effects nobody saw coming but right now we have our hands full trying to get the Republican-run government to stop kidnapping & murdering people.

Horrifying realization du jour: I've been having all these tender thoughts about the UK because they never did this three-cue bullshit in school & a Briton who has, say, attended university can be reasonably expected to be able to read.

It's not just memories of how green it is.

Broadly speaking: reality tv is bad for democracy, influencers are bad for democracy, streamers are bad for democracy, YouTubers are bad for democracy.

Exceptions to all categories exist, but it’s astonishing how absolutely clogged our political and media ecosystems are with low-info narcissists

This winter has been so awful I am already panicking about next Fall when the days start drawing in & I remember how bad this one was & worry the winter of 2026-2027 will be as bad.

If anyone tries to give me chipper one-size-fits-all advice I will block you in such a way as to cause physical pain.

I keep thinking of the stories of old Soviet veterans of WWII saying to American visitors decades later, thank you for the gun or the tank, with it I killed many fascists. No men, but many fascists.

They're all under two feet of snow now, but come to my yard next year & I can hook you up with strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries!
As consumption of strawberries and blueberries has skyrocketed among American families, so too have berry prices. But don't blame the farmers!

"HMS Pinafore" still slaps at nearly 150 but I'm trying to imagine a modern light popular middlebrow entertainment where the hero kicks off the Act I finale by asking everyone to come watch him shoot himself.

The Victorians were operating on a different level.
