Always feels rejuvenating to reconnect with my mathy friends from near and far at math conferences.

Maybe it was a 5 minute hello in passing or a longer time hanging out over a meal or drink. Either way, I loved seeing you friends! 🥰

My latest is the story of how my community has rallied to protect and defend our neighbors in recent days, as ICE has targeted the Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago. "This is not a story about a moment of victory, but a moment of being reminded of our power."
They Came for Our Neighbors. We Showed Up.
Before long, there were dozens, and then hundreds of people in the streets, watching and responding.

Despite the ongoing horrors, protesters have been met with pretty much non-stop honks of support from drivers and truckers passing by this morning.

Appreciate this thread detailing what is happening at the detention facility near me.

Trying to stay informed, protect my neighbors, stay vigilant, support local Latino owned businesses, be ready with my phone to record.
In Broadview, IL this morning outside the Chicago area ICE detention center—

Just rolled up, immediately saw ISP/CCSO arresting a protester w/ a guitar (he appears to be in good spirits over it).

ICE vehicles have been coming and going, including a large bus driven by a masked agent seen earlier.

Literally zip-tied *children*

The cruelty is the point.
“Fuck them kids.”

That’s literally what an ICE agent said when ICE, the FBI et al. raided an apartment in Chicago, including with a Blackhawk helicopter, separated children from their parents, and zip-tied them to each other.

And some people claim this is what they want?! More than once I’ve seen comments in my community, “this is what I voted for!” The cruelty is gross.

It’s unbelievable, unbearable, and inhumane.

The amount of anger I feel about my neighbors in the Chicagoland area being harassed, terrorized, and abducted by 🧊. 😡

I am ready to video and literally on guard for every dark SUV or out-of-state plates I see in my neighborhood or where I’m working in schools. This is terrible.

Peak of the day: ✨ my kids said I did indeed “hit that note” in Golden from KPDH. ✨🙌🏻

Pit: they followed it up with “but it didn’t really sound that good” 😐

Love a video like this for a #howmany prompt in math.

Learning about multiplication? Show this! Starts with 1 then folds over to make 2, then 4, then 8…

Or a BTC-style prompt, “how many total noodles can he make from this?”

We are aiming to have a small 6-8 person noodle dinner party tomorrow Wednesday Sept 17 at 7pm here! The restaurant’s max capacity is 100. If we cant eat together tomorrow, maybe next week! I will com...

We have normalized experiencing the preventable.
I see it in many aspects of life.
Common sense ceases to be common.
Basic human courtesy is foreign.
We don’t have to live this way. We don’t have to accept gaslighting.

I will not cease in speaking the truth…

My Ss this semester (preservice secondary math) graphed their math experience.

We learned:
It’s important to connect with our own experience as we think about teaching others, T we have makes an impact on how we feel about a class, we like listening to K-pop Demon Hunters soundtrack when we work 😊

I see this poster get asked about a lot in a teacher FB group.

I don’t want to yuck someone’s yum but this poster is so old, it just has to be outdated. Right? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a kid even give it a second look? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Maybe it’s feels nostalgic to the teacher? Which is ok.

The calmest way to quiet a room of kids or adults is a chime I bought after attending a PD where the presenter used it. 🔔
I just looked it up and I bought it in 2013. Still one of my most used teacher items!

Find the chime and some other fun stuff on this list I put together for back to school! ⬇️
I wrote another Substack post with a list of teacher favorites! If you are trying to save money or just want to rein in overconsumption, just know you don’t need anything new! What you have is probably enough.

But if you need a back to school treat, here you go! 💸
You Don't Need Any of This
But, if you are looking for a back-to-school treat for yourself, I've made a list. 💸💸💸

Those who say "Without tests, we wouldn't know how kids [or teachers] are doing" just reveal their ignorance about alternative assessments. But such statemts should prompt all of us to ask if we, too, sometimes make a statemt ("X is necessary") instead of asking a Q ("Are there alternatives to X?").

My Kolam Tiles came today!
The 9 year old and 5 year old are giving them a try as an after dinner activity. 🤩 (not pictured, my husband giving it a whirl as well!)

I just had the back to school teacher nightmare where you can’t find your classroom, can’t get control of the class, & everything is going wrong.

I’m leading PD today for adults (who are choosing to be there!) so I think they will be lovely. And I’m not a middle school classroom teacher anymore! 😂

Today I’m thinking about the different perspectives you need to take when planning as a teacher.

I think this can help when it all feels overwhelming. Maybe you are too zoomed out or too zoomed in for what you are planning? 🔎

This thread has my ideas for different zoom levels. 🧵
