#ElemMathChat - Love pattern blocks - one of my favorite manipulatives!

This makes sense… work in progress gives us lots more interesting stuff to talk about… more places to go! #ElemMathChat

That is an EXCELLENT reflective practice! We all need to have one that works for us! #ElemMathChat

A2: Open ended questions where students can contribute without being afraid of giving an incorrect solution, for example: How do you see this pattern growing? #ElemMathChat #MathPlay 🧮

#ElemMathChat - It was my pleasure! Lots of fun "talking math" with you guys.

And sometimes, they won’t let me share their work when they know it’s wrong, but genuine enthusiasm goes a long way towards building relationships. #ElemMathChat

#ElemMathChat - I couldn't agree more. Questions play an important role in the math classroom.

Yes! I can’t say I have a 100% success rate, but it’s powerful! #elemmathchat

A2: I am a fan of sharing 2 or 3 different approaches or solution paths for a problem and having students make connections between them. Having them note where aspects of the problem appear in the different student work. #ElemMathChat

A3: Using manipulatives to represent math concepts provides multiple entry points and a deeper layer of understanding. For example, using legos for the Distributive Property #ElemMathChat #MathPlay 🧮

…because students were then willing to engage to finish the work. When it’s already a finished product, it’s a lecture. Fascinating stuff! They had some great videos. #ElemMathChat

A1 It starts with a robust unit zero that is all about creating community, learning about problem solving, growth mindset, communication, and what it means to do math. We learn protocols, our warm up routines and establish a safe place to learn and make mistakes #ElemMathChat

#ElemMathChat - So true, I LOVE your three rs. Relationshipsm routines and risk-taking. These are important qualities for building a positive math community.

A2 I use notice and wonder first and formost, then I have a bunch of others that I have posted to remind me and to remind students to ask each other and themselves! Here are a few. #ElemMathChat

#ElemMathChat A6. I am always taking mental notes for next time and often pivoting mid-lesson because you never know what your kids know until they start talking! I usually do a mental run through right after a lesson planning for next time based on what I learned.

#ElemMathChat - Great strategy! Students often make discoveries they hadn't thought of before and this is a great way to help students build on their conceptual understanding of concepts.

#ElemMathChat A5. I think some activities naturally increase the importance of listening and building on each others’ observations. Also sometimes regular bridge questions like “Does anybody have an answer different from Julian’s” can be helpful in setting a tone of listening to other students.

#ElemMathChat - Great for community building and for analyzing their choices and strategies.

A3 part of the protocol for explaining thinking comes when we explicitly teach/learn this during unit zero. I also do a non routine task as a warm up daily where we practice that so when we go into the formal lesson the expectations and supports are in place #ElemMathChat
