I need your help you handsome and gorgeous lot. A friend of mine is an autistic adult & PhD student in Public Health at Georgia State University. She has developed a new adult autism screening tool with another autistic adult, Dorothy Ackland.
Help Improve A New Adult Autism Screening Tool Researchers want to improve a new adult autism screening tool, the Reuben-Ackland Autism Inventory (RAAI). We want to interview autistic adults about how we can improve the RAAI. For example, we want to know if questions should be shorter or use different words. You can participate if: • You are an adult (18+) • You are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder • You speak English • You can consent to participate in research without a legal guardian What does the study involve? • A 1-to-2-hour Zoom interview • You can speak out loud or type into the chat • You will be shown questions from the RAAI and asked how we can make them better You can participate in this study alone, or you can participate with a parent or another adult who knows you well. We want to hear from many types of autistic adults, including autistic adults with intellectual disability or difficulty talking. Participants will be given a $50 Tango gift card as thanks. brightwanderer I think a lot about how we as a culture have turned "forever" into the only acceptable definition of success. Like... if you open a coffee shop and run it for a while and it makes you happy but then stuff gets too expensive and stressful and you want to do something else so you close it, it's a "failed" business. If you write a book or two, then decide that you don't actually want to keep doing that, you're a "failed" writer. If you marry someone, and that marriage is good for a while, and then stops working and you get divorced, it's a "failed" marriage. The only acceptable "win condition" is "you keep doing that thing forever". A friendship that lasts for a few years but then its time is done and you move on is considered less valuable or not a "real" friendship. A hobby that you do for a while and then are done with is a "phase" - or, alternatively, a "pity" that you don't do that thing any more. A fandom is "dying" because people have had a lot of fun with it but are now moving on to other things. I just think that something can be good, and also end, and that thing was still good. And it's okay to be sad that it ended, too. But the idea that anything that ends is automatically less than this hypothetical eternal state of success... I don't think that's doing us any good at all.

Andrew Kadel @DrewKadel@social.coop My daughter, who's had a degree in computer science for 25 years, posted this about ChatGPT on Facebook. It's the best description I've seen. Something that seems fundamental to me about ChatGPT, which gets lost over and over again: When you enter text into it, you're asking "What would a response to this sound like?" If you put in a scientific question, and it comes back with a response citing a non-existent paper with a plausible title, using a real journal name and an author name who's written things related to your question, it's not being tricky or telling lies or doing anything at all surprising! This is what a response to that question would sound like! It did the thing! But people keep wanting the "say something that sounds like an answer" machine to be doing something else, and believing it *is* doing something else. It's good at generating things that sound like responses to being told it was wrong, so people think that it's engaging in introspection or looking up more information or something, but it's not, it's only, ever, saying something that sounds like the next bit of the conversation.
