As I get ready for another cozy weekend of Olympics watching, I'm seeing lots of chatter about ice quality for different sports. As a Minnesotan and a science journalist, just wanted to reshare this video about why ice temps matter!
It turns out that not all ice is created equal. Ice rinks are calibrated specifically for different sports, and at the Olympics these sport specifics are tightly controlled by the event’s "ice meisters."

I feel this way about pretty much all vaccine-preventable infectious diseases. You shouldn't be allowed to dump cyanide into municipal drinking water and you shouldn't be allowed to recreationally spread viruses around shared public spaces.
My most authoritarian opinion is that the MMR vaccine should be mandatory, with only medical (not religious or floofy) exemptions allowed. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

Bad news for all the armchair skiing “experts”

“A lot of people have a lot of opinions about what happened yesterday and most of them are incorrect”
Lindsey Vonn's Olympic teammate sets armchair skiing experts straight
When you hook a gate at high speed, as Vonn did in the Olympic downhill, there is little chance of making a recovery, said Keely Cashman.

“the Epstein class” should be THE tagline tbh. it’s so accurate their only defense is redactions, and it captures a hundred different linked evils at once. it also perfectly clarifies why trying to distinguish btw “kitchen table issues” (ie money) and “identity politics” (ie misogyny) is impossible
Ossoff: We were told that MAGA was for working-class Americans. But this is a government of, by, and for the ultra-rich. It’s the wealthiest Cabinet ever. This is the Epstein class. They are the elites they pretend to hate.

Bummed about this bc their limeade is a delight to drink year round and it explains why I haven’t been able to find it since December. Not to mention that most of the carton OJ is pricy and undrinkable these days. Really need the store brands to step up and fill the gap.

It is really infuriating to see how misogyny really does unite men across the sociopolitical spectrum. And, in so far as the Epstein files go, they sort women into two categories: fuckable or irrelevant. When they near a hint of accountability they complain about not being able to make women prey.

This debate or discourse or discussion about why Bezos is dismantling WaPo or whether or not more subscriptions or boycotts could change things or how he could fund it easily is pointless. It’s moot.

Bezos bought the Post to control the narrative and push his agenda. Financials don’t matter.

So the Epstein files dump

1. Protected a lot of predictors

2. Created another partisan food fight.

3. Failed to create any obvious pathway for these women to get accountability.

4. Included a number of clearly unverified claims that can be used to undermine the very legit emails

Hatred cannot govern a country effectively. Prior to this morning's arrest of journalists for doing their jobs, I wrote about this government using fear as policy in the Twin Cities, and why racist governance is bad governance. My first column for @us.theguardian.com.
