The copper kettle shrieks, and you wrap the handle with a thick dishrag to pour a thin stream of boiling water into the teapot. It takes a few moments, but soon the glaze on the pot shifts to a cheerful green. So it's to be mint tea today, then.

It's never too late to try something new.
It's never too late to let your antlers & talons grow wild.
It's never too late to cover yourself in moss & wildflowers and shamble about the old forest, spreading fear and wonder in equal measure.

Yes, the forest is haunted.
But that's not a bad thing.
The creatures of moss & gloom, twigs & talons, and howls & horror are only trying to make connections.
To be seen and heard.
Just like all of us.

You wake in a nest of blankets, hemmed in on three sides by smooth wooden walls and a low curved ceiling. Nearby are the quiet sighs of a dying fire, the heavy silence of being utterly alone. You run your hand over the wood and find a shallow carving of wings. Then another. Then dozens more.

This poor giant tree troll panicked and froze as the photographer snapped this, and now he’s stuck until the next solstice boosts his transmutation abilities. Luckily, he’s only got a few weeks to wait.

You wrap yourself in woollens and leave at dawn to follow a road paved with wide stones, with a bundle of tea in your pocket and a hand-drawn map up your sleeve. The oak-ink has faded over the years, the town names long forgotten, but it’ll still show you safe passage through the Singing Forest.

It took until I was 41 for this milestone and now it’s happened three times in the last month 😐

It might have been a church, once, but tiny roots and tiny claws wore down the walls and peeled back the ceiling until all that remained were four pillars and a threshold. You stand in their middle, open to the starred sky and wind, and the slant song of the leaves above drifts down like a blessing.

There are lonely churches to be found where old saints live in strange stone boxes. When we say saints, that word has to encompass those spirits of place which were there long before the cross came along. Relics of both Christian and folk faith may be the same bone. – Dr. M. Benn

This is eugenics and you’re a eugenicist if you agree with Mark… wayne. Markwayne? Is that really his name?

I’m third-Gen Canadian, but I’ve still taught my kids to never give a stranger their real name, and also to look carefully at their ears and fingers.
New world fae are unpredictable, y’all.
We *just* had an entirely sincere conversation about exactly this thing at the retreat last week. @lizbethmyles.bsky.social understood!!!

People: You don't really believe in fairies, do you?

Irish people: Absolutely not, but still, you wouldn't want to anger them.
Oh definitely. Kinda like going to Iceland and having it explained that no, people don’t REALLY believe in elves. Also, don’t fuck with the elves.

You sing into the east - sharp notes of fir needles and snow and thick pelts against your skin - until the rising sun is swollen with your voice. Snatches of song fall as it arcs across the sky, but as the sun sinks, enough music lingers to bleed into the west, for the one who waits for you there.

the closest match i find: two pebbles, carved into miniature, near-identical foxes. differences only appear in defects inflected by unskilled hands. two carvers on opposite sides of the world, centuries apart, foxes tucked away in stony caves. i oft dream of attempting to carve them a third sibling.
The thing about stones is you will never find two the same. You try; searching sandy shores, mossy caves, and volcanic peaks, but there is always variation in texture, shape, gradation, and history. What are some of the jewels (literal or not) of your collection?

Today’s Fox is loosely inspired by my latest reread of @amalelmohtar.com’s The River Has Roots, which broke me and which you should all go read immediately

You started collecting small and dull stones last year; everyone goes for the flashy ones, and you fancied they felt left out. But it’s been a few months now, and you’ve been finding new ones in your pockets, nestled in your sock drawer. And the funny thing is, they’ve started sighing contentedly.

Hoar frost creeps slowly over hard-packed earth in tight spirals, blooming from each of the enormous hoof prints that mark the path. Far in the distance are the rise and fall of singing voices, and a dry clacking echo as the Winter King’s cart vanishes into the wilds.

This could not be a more effective call to preorder Strange Animals
Scripting 65 episodes of a podcast is a pretty good, if inefficient, way to do your prewriting for a novel.
