Tatsuki Fujimoto on the importance of setting goals as artists (go watch the new Chainsaw Man movie--it's funny and bloody and surprisingly poignant).
Fujimoto: There weren't any prep schools near me, so I went to an art class with a lot of old people, where I did oil paintings in the corner. There were good artists there, so I decided that if I didn't get better than them in four years I would kill them, and since I didn't want to go on the run if I was a good artist, I just kept drawing. NY Times used to be my go-to for news, but I can’t even open it these days without getting wtf vibes from their headlines. Saw this one on election day when so many other places were exalting the city's highest voter turnout in 50+ years.

Good literary translation requires understanding (language, culture, genre--on both sides of the translation) and an ability to write well. "AI" can't do that. There are no shortcuts. Treat your work and foreign language readers with the respect they deserve. You won't fool anyone with this.

It’s hard to believe but there was a cartoon about an immigrant mouse and it was seen as totally fine and not controversial and not woke because it was an aspirational and nice thing about America that people could come here and find a better life
