I read books for work, and I read books for fun. Sometimes I do other stuff in between.

New year, new movies. HAMNET (2025).
This looks cool as hell and I can't wait to hang it up at home. (Also, this was a top 10 movie experience, seeing it at the United Palace in Harlem with a full orchestra.)
Something I learned this weekend: if you ever pay to get something professionally framed, let the shop owner take some big swings on color and texture, because sometimes you'll end up with a frame you never would've asked for but now can't imagine the print without.

Alright, put me down as a HEATED RIVALRY fan. A very cute show with some really winsome performances, and it's nice to live in a world - however briefly - where everyone strives to be empathetic and inclusive. Team Scott Hunter 4ever.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (2026): There’s a jump scare in the first act that is so good — so very, very good — that the crowd broke into spontaneous applause. I have many thoughts on how well horror can work as live theater, but this production proves that there is a place for jump scares on stage.

the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

Fun fact: Chiwetel Ejiofor is sorta how I met my wife? I had in my online profile that I was watching a lot of his movies (DIRTY PRETTY THINGS forever), and she, a copyeditor, messaged me to let me know that spelling his name correctly in my profile was a green flag.

“Governor Shapiro is not meeting the moment. The moment requires that we call a subgroup of people within federal law enforcement — who are killing innocent people, physically assaulting innocent people, threatening and punishing the use of video — what they are.“ That’s my DA. 🫰
Philly DA Larry Krasner says ‘don’t be a wimp’ after Gov. Josh Shapiro decried his comparison of ICE agents to Nazis
Gov. Josh Shapiro called District Attorney Larry Krasner's comparison of ICE agents to Nazis "abhorrent." Krasner responded that Shapiro is "not meeting the moment."

Matt is reveling in Jesca Hoop; I’m blissed out eavesdropping on a mother and her Gen Z daughter arguing over whether the mom can post a photo of her daughter on Instagram without her consent, and it’s already devolved into “I don’t have to pay for your college loans, you know.”

Books forever, and fuck ICE.
Beck's Books is donating 100% of their shop profits through Saturday (Jan 17) to mutual aid for their neighbors targeted by ICE in Minneapolis.

They ship anywhere in the continental US:
