The future is mutual aid. ✨ 💪

Trying to build community at the intersections of art and justice movements, sometimes organizing mutual aid fundraisers and distributing zines. 🕎 for a free 🇵🇸.

One of my favorite things about Bluesky (or at least my little corner of it) is that people are always sharing resources for taking action.

So here's a pinned thread collecting those resources, some made by me and some made by others.

For example, @librariesftp.bsky.social started with 5 of us, all volunteers. No money [we still have none but we sell tshirts to raise a small amount & rely on in kind donations for the rest], and we very much punch above our weight. Many people think we're a staffed nonprofit. But nope.

There will be a day when the US is on the other side of what it has done to other countries. I may not be here to experience it. But it's a guarantee. All empires fall.

This could actually be a golden age of radical public history. So many people are looking to better understand the antecedents to our current moment. We have good scholarship that can be shared with the public in myriad ways. Revive freedom schooling across the land.

I've got a zine coming about the failed attempts to suppress David Walker's Appeal in the 19th century. The current fascists won't succeed in suppressing information that wants to be shared. It is even harder for them to do than their predecessors. #Onwards

It's possible to just do things. To just begin. It takes some people [who usually won't get paid], some ideas and a way to raise a small amount of money.

Last week I spent three days volunteering to deliver and distribute clothing and Christmas gifts to migrant workers/families who were displaced by flooding and chased by ICE. Seeing happy kids made it worthwhile but so fucking sad too. So much work to do! I'll be back there soon.
Reply or quote with something good you did for your friends or community this year! 😊👇
I've been saying this to @distributeaid.org's major donors in our end of year emails, but we all really aught to be highlighting the good that we do.

It's not a brag, it's an example to others and normalizes helping your community. 😊

I can't help but notice that like half the replies here are from disabled/chronically ill people who have been pushed out of organizing spaces by groups that refuse to wear masks or take other covid precautions. 😭
Sincere question and I hope we can make a safe place for this discussion, are there people out there who feel like they don't know how to get involved and make a difference?

What do you feel like the barriers are for you getting involved in organizing?

Have you tried and failed?

I'm lucky to be plugged now, but here are some barriers I've faced in the past:

I was part of a local climate group that fell apart during the early pandemic due to a combination of pre-existing conflict and the difficulties of virtual organizing. A while later, I was part of a small group

This is why I feel so strongly about the centrality of building mutual aid infrastructure to leftist movements!

Movements should be places where people can go for support, not just places where they are expected to give time and energy.
This was a good thread. Seeing a lot of people who are struggling to find ways to give back and not seeming to realize THEY are the ones who need mutual aid!

So many caregivers in this thread doing it alone, without resources or community to lean on. Love y'all.

I really wish that a community land trust would buy a space like the Democracy Center and have the groups that use it run it democratically.

This is one of the many projects that I want to exist but don't have the capacity to spearhead, lol.
Another Boston-specific barrier to organizing: the closure of the Democracy Center, which is part of a larger problem of a lack of free and low-cost spaces for meetings/events.
One other barrier, specific to the Boston area, is the lack of a good way to get between Cambridge/Somerville and Jamaica Plain! I've gotten invited to so many things in JP that sounded cool, but it takes so much time and energy to schlep out there.

All of this! Fatphobia is so deeply tied to misogyny, ageism, and the capitalist drive to keep finding new ways to extract money from people.
The levels of grift in the hate-your-body economy continue to reach for new levels of creative destruction with the onset of GLP-1s. I’m watching them spin up a “loose skin” panic in real time.

I’m not sure America can exist without the idea that bodies must be punished.

Please keep boosting this post! The family is less than $1K shy of their $7K goal to bury their beloved son/brother/cousin.

The funeral is two days away. Can we help them reach their goal in time?

Shacoby Kenny should still be alive. If he'd had $2500 to pay in bail he would be. #bospoli

We can't control the uncertainty and likely shocks of 2026 but we can invest in our coping capacity, and the capacity of our communities, our families, our organizations, and the ecosystems we are embedded within. 👇🏻
'Tis the season of New Year's resolutions! But, if you, like me, are guessing that 2026 will be full of uncertainty and disruption I'd offer a slight twist. Think about how, in the year to come, you can invest in your coping capacity.
