to the extent that there is a “carrot” to trumpism it is the same carrot that slaveholders offered to lower class white men: “you can be an overseer”

Souhan: What good are sports in times like these?
Local owners should be making a statement. Better yet, they should be taking action.

Can I say this more plainly: The government is such a threat to the people here that we cannot put the names of schools in print.
One thing that really stood out to me in the Atlantic article is that the author cannot name the Minneapolis schools he visited. He *cannot publicly name the schools* for fear of turning them (even more) into targets.

This is genuinely excellent. My only complaint (ongoing with nat’l media) is that it over-centers Minneapolis when ICE are all over the metro area and outlying towns. They are swarming St. Paul too, and inner suburbs like Woodbury, Roseville, and Shakopee.
The Atlantic Magazine just dropped a tremendous story on the Minnesota Resistance. The author is a war correspondent & sees the echoes of leaderless community empowerment around the globe: www.theatlantic.com/politics/202... (supposed to be a gift link, might not work, it’s in Apple News, too.)

I am once again asking: didn’t these ppl read books, watch movies as kids?? The hero is the main character evincing whatever type of situational COURAGE the story required. Standing up for what is right and for those who can’t do it themselves. Didn’t these ppl want to be the heroes?? I don’t get it
I do think that a possibly underrated dynamic in The Horrors is that the Right as it has reconstituted itself under Trump legitimately can’t understand sincere moral or physical courage

Steph Curry on watching the protests from his hotel window: "In negative 10-degree weather. It was beautiful to see that turnout. That speaks to how important people felt to have their voice heard. In those elements and whatever streets outside our hotel, they were out, and it was amazing to watch."

This was just me making this comparison yesterday, but today the Korean news is calling Minnesota "America's Gwangju" and have human rights lawyers explaining how America is now living through the dictatorship Korea once had.
The Chun regime that my wife fought against in the 80s did the exact same thing. They needed a "crisis" that "only they could solve" to hoard more ill-gotten power, so they chose one city (Gwangju), declared its inhabitants enemies, sent trucks full of soldiers to violently attack and kill them.

This morning, I recorded a video on TikTok about why DHS’s arguments for the power to enter homes without judicial warrants in immigration cases are bunk.

Nine hours later, TikTok still says my video is “under review,” and can’t be shared.

Well, here’s a link:

> "system crash” deleted nearly two weeks of surveillance footage from inside the facility

that's not how anything works they're lying and destroying evidence hope that helps
And what is happening inside ICE detention centers? 404 Media also learned that the federal government claimed that the day after it was sued for allegedly abusing detainees at an ICE detention center, a “system crash” deleted nearly two weeks of surveillance footage from inside the facility.
ICE Says Critical Evidence In Abuse Case Was Lost In 'System Crash' a Day After It Was Sued
The government also said "we don't have resources" to retain all footage and that plaintiffs could supply "endless hard drives that we could save things to."

We have to see the logic of the killings as well as the killings themselves. The horror is a truth in itself. But it is also a sign of a political logic, one known from the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century.

sometimes I think about how impoverished media vocabulary for talking about collective action is, and what this means for the capacity to envision ways of acting together

everyone in Minneapolis is a “protestor” and that doesn’t begin to describe what they are doing & how it works & what it does

I'm so glad there's more attention on the violence, trauma and lives lost due to this federal occupation.

AND we also need more attention on the less visible but INTENSE impact on our neighbors who haven't been able to leave home for weeks, are hungry, scared & at risk of eviction.
