This is a mansion tax right? Ed Miliband vindicated AGAIN
Nothing but positivity for this idea

Progressive.

Better than a transactions tax, doesn't gum up the market.

Encourages downsizing.

Raises useful cash.

Even Osborne likes it.

Looking forward to paying it...

Not the main issue but it’s just so… dumb? Like at some point surely the right could comprehend that ads are diverse to hit as many potential customers as possible. They’re supposed to be the ones in favour of capitalism!
Montgomerie has been a dick for a long time yes but there genuinely was a time when I do not believe he would be out there saying it’s not racist to say it drives you mad to see ads full of black people. This is a new thing! It is not a good thing!

Ngl I’m quite interested in the venn diagram of “potential buyer for the French Crown Jewels” and “can show off stolen goods which have Wikipedia pages saying they’re stolen without causing major difficulties for themselves”

1) I already bought a ticket for tomorrow already 😐 that’ll teach me to plan my holidays in advance

2) Very amused by the idea of the culture minister turning up at an active crime scene and trying to help somehow. Lisa Nandy just hanging out with the forensic team

I do find the way liberal religious people talk about the literal truth of god/heaven as missing the point a bit bizarre, as an atheist science nerd lol. A world with an all powerful sentient creator is different to one without! I don’t see how this is different to wanting to know how stars work!
do you ever think about how Christian atheists and Christian fundamentalist agree that the Bible is a science textbook but they just disagree about how up to date the science textbook is

So while I think this is correct my gut feeling is to draw a distinction between deeper analysis (very important) and intellectual tradition (who gives a shit)
Something I find striking about Zach Polanski is how - unlike the vast majority of those who played a key role in Corbynism - his politics are so clearly not rooted in any kind of deeper analysis or intellectual tradition. It's all just a surface-level synthesis of 2010s left-wing slogans and memes.

Really is not discussed enough how England have, for a long time now, been an absolute machine in qualifying. This is not nothing! Very big teams have scares in qualifying! Italy have missed the last two world cups! We don’t even notice qualifying is happening because England never break a sweat!
I'm a fair-weather fan of the England national side but the transformation from 2002-era "tabloid-appointed World Cup Winners who hate one another oh fuck we've gone out in the last 16" to "some nice role-models who make you feel disappointed for losing in the semis" isn't a terrible trajectory.

Apropos of Taylor album, the most brutal diss track is still Common People because it’s explicit that Jarvis never had a second date with that girl. It’s literally “here’s the most annoying person I ever met, no heartbreak or complex feelings, she was just a prick and I recognised that immediately”

I’m sorry, what
This Israeli government decision to host Tommy Robinson will widen the growing gulf between the Netanyahu government and the British public, including the broad majority of Jews in Britain (3/4 of whom dsapproved of Netanyahu, before this new link to this anti-Muslim racist UK far right convict).

Also - have TfL somehow patented their contactless readers? Why are the ones in Cardiff but also Stockholm so slow and shit?
What’s with, e.g. the fake wooden floors in buses now? Why do the bevel windows on double deckers go in and out of style? When will people realise that putting USB chargers on buses which get any footfall is just an expensive way to put broken bits of plastic in your chair?

The most successful politician in England is Sadiq Khan and there is functionally only one reason we don't acknowledge that
Some good news.

London is meeting legal limits for toxic NO2 pollution for the first time – almost 200 years earlier than predicted – following the Mayor’s "world leading air pollution policies," City Hall announces.

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone - and similar policies - really do work.

I honestly feel a lot less bad about Anglo monolingualism after, on a train in Italy a couple got on, did the stereotypical Brit thing of speaking to everyone in English and when people didn’t understand just speaking LOUDER AND SLOWER

And then turned to each other and switched into Swedish
Also, suspect if you are bright and skilled there are multinational offices in Europe where English is the communal language.

The bleakest cultural difference is that in The Bridge, the heroic cop reports her partner for extrajudicially murdering a criminal and he goes to prison and the show sides with her, in the UK/France remake the cops say things like “ the first duty of every cop is to stand by their colleagues”
A fun game to play is the 'fake remake', i.e. if you were trying to make this show for a different country's comic culture, what it would spit out as. The British version of ABC's Superstore, for example, is Black Books.
Comedy is IMO the purest expression of a nation's character, which is why none of the straight remakes really work well even across very similar countries (see, for instance: Call My Agent! - the French version is funny *to Brits*, the British version is funny to no-one).

Intervision is notable for exactly one thing which is it started before widespread home phones in the USSR and they used to make people vote by switching off their lights, switching them on when the act they were voting for appeared, and measuring the electricity demand
(listened to the Intervision tracks - they're mostly really boring, which is no surprise when you take all the gays out of any cultural event. Hope Vietnam or Colombia win tho x)
