Twirling, twirling towards freedom
According to the BBFC the cinema release of Armageddon is a 12 and the DVD is a 15 and I put it to you that Ben Affleck bumped up the age rating by saying fuck on the commentary and somehow no one stopped him
This is such a delight. In addition, the thing which is funny about it is the (separately recorded) Bruce Willis commentary that just is accidentally funny every time it pipes up.
I know everyone has heard this but I can't not post it again given the topic:

Time to start discourse that if the bear can use its evolutionary advantages (big, fast) I saline be allowed to use mine (intelligence, co operation, ingenuity). I should be allowed to call 999 about the bear or hit it with a car. Humans beat bears in fights *all the time*. We shoot them.
What was the percentage who thought they could beat a bear in a fight again?

Misconduct in public office is the funniest crime, it’s so broad in how it’s defined it’s almost literally the Crime of Being A Dickhead
Times:

The Metropolitan Police is expected to announced on Tuesday evening that Mandelson is being investigated on suspicion of misconduct in public office, an offence that carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

I obviously still wouldn’t be in favour of starving kids if it halved the price of a pint but 5p is incredible stuff.

Rejoice! Pints are 0.7% cheaper!

Hey @hbomberguy.bsky.social I found a SECOND press release with emoticons in it
Oh my gd.

Musk is fucking insane with this quoted sentence from the press release on SpaceX acquiring xAI.

"This marks not just the next chapter, but the next book in SpaceX and xAI's mission: scaling to make a sentient sun to understand the Universe."

As a good socialist I’d vote for this to be the actual rates if people born before 1996 weren’t exempt lol
Marginal tax rates for graduates with student loans – add interest and another 6% for postgrads.

£25,000: 37%
£50,270: 51%
£100,000: 71%

The files show Epstein emailing Mandelson asking if he can set up Leonardo DiCaprio (who he didn’t appear ago to have met although he tried) with brand deals, then 4 days later an irritated message on behalf of DiCaprio’s agent asking him to knock it off. Epstein seemingly was just like that.
Hey maybe remember that selection bias is a thing and we don’t have exhaustive archives of every other email all these people sent. I don’t know what’s served by wishcasting Epstein as some evil Forrest Gump when in half these emails he’s literally just forwarding other people. He’s just around.

As UK Bsky’s Premier Tedious Nolan Apologist I’m very amused to see the gamer right’s weird parasocial elevation of him, a man who went to the women’s march and had a Dem senator cameo in TDK, as The Gamergate Director finally meet reality and them cry about it. But also, have they seen Oppenheimer?

Apparently this is less efficient but I constantly have to fight being negatively polarised into being pro queuing by people pretending “waiting at the bar” was some beloved tradition and the highlight of their night out
January 31, 2026 at 7:06 PM
I know this isn’t the biggest thing but the Epstein files apparently involve all these people communicating socially with their friends *via email*. In the 2010s! Is this an old person thing? A rich person thing? Email is for work or buying things, it’s like organising parties over Microsoft Teams

You kind of have to cheat with Yoon Suk Yeol, genuinely no one will ever top trying to start a nuclear war for political advantage.
Party game for the weekend:

Try to come up with a historical presidential scandal that Trump didn't top (either with new actions or breaking news about old/continuing actions) *this week*.

Watergate? Iran/Contra? Any sex scandal? Self-dealing? Accepting bribes? Got all those. *This week*.

I’m kind of fascinated by what nerds feel the need to explain and what they don’t. I guarantee most people writing 30k word wikis on Darth Revan also like Nolan’s Batman’s where Gotham is a fantasy city with monorail and a slum island in Begins, Chicago in TDK and New York in DKR
sidenote: I am fascinated by the fact no one has ever tried to explained this
January 1993:

Have these PC weirdos making Deep Space Nine even watched The Next Generation? This isn't what the Trill look like. Why hasn't this been explained?

A beloved cultural institution that makes a profit and has booked Timothee Chalamet in person next month being stuck in months of litigation with their landlord over their continued existence does seem like something in our housing policy might be not great!
Hello friends. Today marks exactly one year since we launched the campaign to Save The PCC! It remains an ongoing fight, but we're so grateful for your overwhelming support over the last year. Check our petition site for updates on the state of things.

Tbf this does come slightly closer to at least answering the question of why William Shakespeare, a man exclusively known as “the guy who wrote those plays”, actually being named Christopher Marlowe would be more earth shattering than David Bowie’s real name being David Jones
This is utterly ridiculous, but it’s not imo *more* ridiculous than any of the other Shakespeare conspiracy theories, tho’ I see that as always it depends on classist (& laughably wrong) assumptions about what a provincial grammar school education meant back then.

Shakespeare was actually a black Jewish woman, new book claims

Obviously MP defections need Farage’s personal approval but do we honestly think Reform’s processes are robust enough to stop one Elizabeth Truss from registering as a lay member? Or that she’s not attention seeking enough to do it?
Is there anyone Reform would turn down, at this point, do we think?

Genuinely do American elites know who Mark Carney is? Obviously he never ran *their* central bank but I had the impression he was at Davis etc a lot in his UN climate role? Because both here and in Canada, there’s a “shit, THAT GUY is abandoning cautious centrism and the status quo?”
"So even though I am still betting on the American future, I wouldn’t ask Mark Carney or any other leaders to simply keep the faith. I would just ask them to consider every step away from us in light of the potential destination and the powers waiting there."

How would you ruin your political career by going on DID, I would deal psychic damage to Bluesky by picking the first song I remember my mum playing to me as a small child, because it reminded her of her youth - Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit
Something I've been thinking since reading this bit in James Marriott's Substack is that Kemi Badenoch is in many ways the politician of the future:she avowedly does not, by her own account, have time for deep reading, her luxury items were *all of the Marvel movies*, etc etc.
Is parliament now post-literate?, beware declining superpowers, thankfulness, awe and wonder, and how AI destroys institutions

Weirdly reminiscent of that Gujarat police chief who kept refusing direct orders from Modi to let Muslims be massacred. Things it’s fun to think about the global hegemon.
O'Hara refusing to step away from the scene is something to keep an eye on
BREAKING: The Tribune confirmed on Instagram that the man shot has died, according to two sources with knowledge of the incident.

ICE attempted to order local police from the scene, but Chief Brian O'Hara refused, sources also told the Tribune. O'Hara instructed his officers to preserve the scene.

This is obviously fair and imo makes the case against mayoralties rather than regional parliaments because I’m a big believer that if devo is going to work First Ministers should be talked about for Westminster leadership, and if Burnham was MLA for Gorton this would be much easier
All the coverage of Andy Burnham is about what it would mean for Labour at Westminster.

Can one outlet at least mention that Burnham is less than halfway into his term as mayor & would be legally obliged to resign that role if he became an MP?

There's a serious case for a party saying "no" to that
