Really proving @stephenkb.bsky.social’s thesis here that people get suspicious of Fiona because she’s the only contestant who knows what a barrister is and that it has nothing to do with investigations. Including the two barristers.

Smugly asking anyone who says kidnapping is bad if they knew who Terry Waite was before he was taken hostage
Badenoch has a remarkable ability to be rebarbative in any context. The first sentence here is totally unnecessary.

Stand trial for what?!
Rubio has confirmed (via BBC) Maduro will stand trial in the U.S.

Fucking hell, call your reps.
Chatham House expert has just declared the possibility that Maduro has likely been flown out of country to stand trial in the U.S. "in a violation of national sovereignty."

"The U.S. will morally own what the outcomes are."

The biggest movie of 2025 (outside China) is about the evil US military’s resource extraction plans being foiled by Diet Native American and the 5 biggest movies of 2026 will include Supergirl and a version of The Odyssey with colour-blind trans-inclusive casting

The number of people I know irl at the time of the XL bully ban who appeared to sincerely believe that anti-dog or anti certain breeds of dog racism is a real issue we should be concerned about was quite extraordinary
I don't dislike dogs to be clear. But I really really dislike how many dog owners allow their dogs to foul the streets and to yap at people and scare kids and still expect everyone to think their precious little pooch is such a good dog 14/10 whatever

This is being treated as if it’s contradictory but it’s quite obviously not lol
How good a year do Britons say 2025 was for...

Themselves personally
Good: 36%
Average: 35%
Bad: 27%

The UK
Good: 6%
Average: 24%
Bad: 66%

At this point radio is like, definitely going to outlast linear TV right?
MTV shuts down music channels that started in 1991. BBC radio, which started in 1922, is still broadcasting

Making “Christian faith” a key part of Britishness when Northern Ireland is defined primarily by civil war between catholics and Protestant and Scotland is one of the only polities on Earth where an absolute majority are self-declared agnostic or atheist is, to be fair, quite funny
It seems to be the clear position of Charlie Downes - the campaigns director of Restore Britain - that Kemi Badenoch "is not British and never will be" as it is dependent on ancestry.

Genuinely remarkable to have the budget cut through more than wars, natural disasters or the pope dying, Rachel Reeves single-handedly disproving if it bleeds it leads

Shame they used that to announce they were going to raise taxes then not do that
Every week this year we asked Britons what news story they had heard most about - here are 2025's top stories in one chart

1. 64% Budget (Nov/Dec)
2. 63% US/Israel vs Iran clashes (Jun)
3. 62% LA wildfires (Jan)
4. 56% US tariffs (Apr)
5. 55% Pope Francis death (Apr)

Maybe this also explains why the most popular and successful British politicians of the last half century (Thatcher, Blair, Brown as chancellor) were among the weirdest people to ever live
They come across as a combination of wet and officious. They remind people of people they dislike in real life, and get coded that way.

I’m aware Arsenal would be hit as much as anyone else by refs actually enforcing rules when someone’s about to take a corner but Gabriel’s basically getting beaten up in the box

The list of things now deemed woke includes the national trust, West Yorkshire police and an actor in mum-beloved bbc dramas who tells kids not to carry knives. And possibly Torvill and Dean.
The Times text makes no attempt to justify making Idris Elba the most prominent "leader in culture war' in its illustration of the black actor."Elba, 53, is knighted for services to young people through his Elba Hope Foundation, which supports education, community development and youth empowerment".

Honestly just a fascinating example of a kind of post fame where everyone was just vaguely aware she used to be famous. I do not believe more than 1% of people talking about her today have seen The Ravishing Idiot. I certainly haven’t.
honestly I think it’s heartwarming that it’s still possible to milkshake duck as an internationally known icon posthumously at age 91
Chappell Roan shares follow-up story after deleting Brigitte Bardot tribute post:

“Holy shit i did not know all that insane shit Ms. Bardot stood for obvs I do not condone this. very disappointing to learn.”

There should be literally no circumstances, ever, where citizenship is can be revoked. If you literally sign up to fight for an opposing army in a war, then we should prosecute you for treason not revoke citizenship
Hell, I'm not convinced we should revoke citizenship at all.

But certainly not for being a twat online.

Ok genuinely explain like I’m five what her problem is here. How can an election not be time limited? Until the CEC is elected who else would make decisions but the MPs, literally nobody else is in post? Is she asking for another conference to set the rules of the election?
Now, more than ever, we need a CEC that will fight for a party led by its members — not MPs or bureaucrats.

It’s the same with Trump’s authoritarianism, they never say that’s what they’re doing. Gen one of the hardest things to understand about the 30s for modern audiences is ppl really did go around saying “democracy is a bad system I oppose and think we should replace with a better system, dictatorship”
It’s notable how today’s all-but-open racists still feel the need for a language of euphemism.

I kind of had the same thing with The Sympathizer. Is it kind of odd that this spy novel goes on an extended tangent that is transparently just the author’s grievances about how annoying he thinks Apocalypse Now is? Yes. But honestly if you go along for the ride it’s fun
I think honestly with Babel I was able to look past this. I kind of accepted Kuang's elite academic perspective and the quirks that went with it, and embraced the vibe and translation stuff and loved it.

I think that this is a particularly bad footnote fwiw!
do we really need footnotes telling us when characters’ claims are true or false? I’m not sure this is a claim that can be resolved in a footnote anyhow

Every parent of young children talks about Bluey like it’s the last season of Breaking Bad and I can’t tell if this is just sleep deprivation, how bad kids tv normally is (2 decades later my mum still has a vendetta against the Tweenies), or it’s true
Unironically: the cricket episode of Bluey is one of the finest pieces of television made this decade.

Ok here’s my moderately spicy take - most of the 2019 MCU’s problems are because it’s too much like comic books now. And most people (not all but most, including me) just prefer films to comic books and always have
*Waves fist in air* CHAPEK!
Its utterly hilarious how good phase 1-3 MCU was and then they just completely trashed it

I think the answer to this - are we the people in the world who care the most about December 25th - is clearly yes right? We have no national day or thanksgiving, no Christmas meal on Christmas Eve. It’s all Christmas Day. And very very cross community, I know Jews Mulisms and Sikhs who put trees up
What I’m asking is, are we, the British, the most Christmassy people on earth ?
