Every instance of "AI democratizes the arts, you're classist and ableist and a gatekeeper for trying to stop it" is a slap in the face to the literally centuries of poor, disabled people making art on the margins and a crass lie in service of a machine that strips down and regurgitates dreams

Every time I get a new email about the Anthropic class action settlement I just want to fucking cry because it's a reminder that I (and a ton of other writers) have been excluded from even having this tiny crumb of justice because our publishers didn't take the extra step of registering copyright.

Can Take the Boy out of the South, Etc. it does not surprise me that sometimes when I say I miss you you hear honeysuckle you hear Happy Hollow Road you hear the Cahaba and its million years of wearing rocks into smooth fists you hear summer storm on tarpaper roof highway traffic beyond Gillespie’s pasture kudzu swallowing back fence in spring red dirt and pine straw all these distant seasons I bring you like a botanist transporting an invasive species to a new continent we plant what we want have so little say in how it grows

I'm sorry. As a technology writer, I'm supposed to be telling you that this bet will some day pay off, because one day we will have shoveled so many words into the word-guessing program that it wakes up and learns how to actually do the jobs it is failing spectacularly at today. This is a proposition akin to the idea that if we keep breeding horses to run faster and faster, one of them will give birth to a locomotive. Humans possess intelligence, and machines do not. The difference between a human and a word-guessing program isn't how many words the human knows. I'm sorry. I know that when we talk about "digital sovereignty," we're obliged to talk about how we can build more data-centres that we can fill up with money-losing chips from American silicon monopolists in the hopes of destroying as many jobs as possible while blowing through our clean energy goals and enshittifying as much of our potable water as possible.

We Wake Each Day in This World We've Made Togethe The first thing I notice about this world is its mouth. Its many mouths. The way each opens differently, angle of teeth or tongue held just so — all the ways to be consumed. All the caverns in the surface of this place, their depths, their dripping darknesses. Simply to be alive here is to be at risk. I'm talking of course about the planet of being in love with you, the hungriest planet, this world we've made together, the aesthetics of it - the body of it. All mouth. All plunder.

The World We Live in Now A rich man's vanity rocket explodes & rains poison over a dozen neighborhoods & the sea & this is just, like, Monday or whatever. It's snowing where it shouldn't be snowing & at least the snow might slow the fires. My father texts to say they're all fine, don't worry & I don't know if he means from a shooting or a tornado or the zombie fungus from that game they made into a TV show. All the narratives we thought were cautionary tales turn out to be blueprints. I thought at least we'd agreed on who the assholes are in Star Wars, but no, not even that.
