Did you know that your healthcare premiums are about to double because the GOP is intentionally sabotaging the Affordable Care Act and pretending that Democrats are trying to give undocumented immigrants free insurance?

Yes indeed! What do you do when you're covering a lying, bloviating politician who revels in attention, good or bad? Ignoring him or covering him neutrally or even covering him critically doesn't work. You've got to try something different! Clip and save this chart:

Ok. So. A lot of congress will say they “submitted a letter to forgo pay during shutdown.”

Congress is paid once a month so they have 30 days. Secondly, they want you to believe they are saying they will give up their pay. No. They just hold it until it reopens

The issue is not surrendering. It’s understanding that policy differences don’t make a damn bit of difference if you no longer have the democratic structures in place to debate and decide them. Unite over saving democracy, then we can go back to fighting over our policy differences.

This is why it drives me nuts when people say that no autocracy has ever been restored to a democracy. It’s empirically not true with several examples that can be pointed to off the top of my head: Ukraine, South Korea, Chile, Poland, Brazil, Philippines, Argentina, Spain…
Nothing is inevitable. In either direction. Hope and work.
“52% of all autocratization episodes become U-Turns, which increases to 73% when focusing on the last 30 years. The vast majority of U-Turns (90%) lead to restored or even improved levels of democracy”

generally speaking, and with the glaring exception of november 2024, the more directly democratic an institution has been, the better it has checked Trump (eg grand and petit juries); the more elite and insular, the less effective (the Senate, the Supreme Court, big business)

The fact that right-wingers commit the vast bulk of domestic terrorism in the US is well-established by numerous expert investigations & reports.

But the right *accuses* the left more often, makes more *noise* about it, so they've bullied reporters into framing this as a "both sides" problem.

im just saying, maybe it’s time to let a women again lead the Dems in Congress? Especially a mother. Because Nancy Pelosi was the most effective counter to the last Trump administration, and she treated him fearlessly like the child he is.

Trump's "big" trade deal is with the UK:
- It's a framework not a deal
- They're our 11th largest trading partner
- They're only 3% of US trade (97% to go)
- They *already* charge average tariffs of only 1% (limited upside)

It's a photo op, not a macroeconomically significant moment.
