The writers represent a national conversation that isn’t limited to Mamdani. But only he was on a ballot yesterday. It’s not just Mamdani that is being called out amongst Jews. This is just one article. Within Jewish circles, left and right Jew hate is being discussed in panicky tones.

There’s a feeling that the walls are closing in. The mainstreaming of it on the right heightens the fear. And a lot of it is drawn on family experience with it here and former home countries: USSR, Europe, Iran and ME.

No. They are genuinely afraid. Maybe not so much that HE will intentionally target Jews, but that the environment will become more permissive, or he will be less responsive, when violent antisemitism happens. Or he has a blind spot and will appoint people that are. He’s symbolic for a national fear
