I’m excited to announce I'll be joining the Yale Political Science dept as a PhD student this fall! I plan to focus on American politics: local accountability, the pol econ of campaigns and party orgs, and housing politics.
"Democracy for Realists" is less than ten years old. Why are we doing a new round of "political scientists vs. journalists/consultants" about the exact same topic?

I understand why this is bad in theory, but if I were in the military, not receiving my regular paycheck, and all I got was a $100 in the mail thanks to some guy, I would not feel any gratitude. Funding government operations is just much more expensive than the private sector can handle.

I think Platner has anti-fascist tendencies and isn't a Nazi, but I won't defend him further. He clearly hasn't thought through most things and doesn't deserve to be a Senator. The issue is that there definitely should be someone else like him to run in his place with less baggage.

TBF, if you pay attention to the research that does this more and more it points out that the trends started around Carter or even earlier

Jeffries: We have an American president behaving like an organized crime boss, stealing taxpayer dollars in real-time in front of everyone in plain sight. And Republicans have nothing to say about the emerging crime scene at 1600 Pennsylvania avenue.

People really need to wrap their heads around HOW ATTENUATED our election cycles have gotten.

They're acting like the Maine primary was a race between Platner and Mills only and it's too late for anyone else to jump in.

The deadline to REGISTER FOR IT is in MARCH!

Go out and recruit SOMEONE ELSE

Aggressors in wars never get the Nobel for putting down arms, but yet they give the prize to people who just talk to them a bit until they decide to voluntarily stop. The mediators aren't making the decisions. It's odd, no?

If Trump deserves the prize, they really should be giving it to Netanyahu.
Just now— @SpeakerJohnson announces he will lead a global pressure campaign to get the narcissist-in-chief a Nobel Prize next year

Base coaches are getting fired
So, bases loaded. CF Frelick tipped the ball into the wall, making it in play and not an out. Frelick relayed to SS Joey Ortiz to catcher William Contreras, forcing out the runner at home. Contreras then ran the ball to third, forcing the runner there.

You know, a garden-variety double play.

I think formal economic modeling is a type of sado-masochism that is nonetheless valuable, and there should be a class of people (not me) who just do that and we all agree to trust them on it if they figure out anything important.

It's pretty embarrassing for Vance that Miller can get away with this. Whether or not Vance agrees with it, strategically he should want to be the one playing this role.
Miller’s apparent elevation to shadow president and his seeming intent to declare an end to the constitutional order would, in any other administration, be treated as a executive branch meltdown that was immensely embarrassing for the president and requiring Miller’s immediate removal

If you oppose DHS and ICE and you're looking for work, you should be applying for these jobs
overt nazi language in this DHS job listing (which i’m told is for a low-level but important job in adjudicating immigration applications and requires knowledge of the law)

You know what would be great? If Democrats came out and said that the next time they’re in power, they’ll change the rules and end shutdowns for good. And then actually did it.

Beyond being dumb and unnecessary, it’s flat-out disrespectful to keep treating federal employees like bargaining chips.

Yarvin seems to be doing some sort of publicity tour? I saw an ad that he'll be doing a debate at Yale Law School (closed to the public).

Anyway I have no interest but I think the condition of his invitation to these things should be that he wears a bike helmet throughout.
Seeing Curtis Yarvin tweet is like if you watch a horror movie that sets up this mysterious evil villain, and then at the end of the movie comes the grand reveal… and it’s just Alf. And you can’t help but laugh and also feel a bit let down. That’s it??

This is exactly the sort of epistemology driving beliefs in witchcraft and shamans. There's power to it, no doubt. One reason I tend to put less weight on recent narratives about biased information driving political trends.
Five years ago, @brandyzadrozny.bsky.social and I did a story about rural Oregon's fever dream that Antifa was coming to their town from Portland.

Hundreds showed up armed downtown because they heard on Facebook that "Antifa buses" were coming.

No buses came so they said Antifa "retreated."
In Klamath Falls, Oregon, victory declared over antifa, which never showed up
Towns from Washington state to Indiana have seen armed groups begin patrolling the streets after rumors spread on social media about an antifa invasion.

I'd go further and say that the boosting of outlier research by conservative politicos as a framing strategy to devalue academia has nothing to do with the content of the work itself.

On the exact opposite end of the spectrum, much of Stephen Kershnar's work was used to the same end.
but what do you want academics as a whole *to do* that will materially move the needle? there are twenty people doing regressions for every one using the ivory tower to scream that decolonization is not a metaphor. but as long as that one person does exist Chris Rufo is going to find them and boost.

Why do people put "MBA" next to their name? It's a two-year degree and I'm not sure that even faculty in the business schools can give you a coherent answer about what unique skills come with the degree
