Just after midnight on 1 January 2026, a new eruption started from #Etna's eastern flank: a fissure opened at ~2100 m elevation, and a lava flow is descending through the desert-like Valle del Bove. Photos taken in the evening of 1 January from Etna's east and southeast flanks

Not one, but TWO paroxysmal eruptive episodes at #Etna 's Northeast Crater on 27 December 2025, AND minor activity at the Voragine crater. Though the Northeast Crater has frequently shown minor activity in recent decades, its last paroxysmal episode was on 27-28 March 1998.

Eruptive activity has increased since 24 December 2025 at two of #Etna 's four summit craters: the Northeast Crater and the Bocca Nuova. Strombolian explosions produce jets of incandescent material and minor ash emissions

Merry Christmas from Etna! 🌋🎄
Strombolian activity is ongoing at the Northeast Crater, with glowing ejecta and a small plume drifting NE. Minor ashfall in Piano Provenzana and Taormina.

A swarm of earthquakes has been rattling the Bay Area since mid-November. This is only the latest of various swarms over the last half-century. What’s going on with this swarm, and how does it compare?

(Plus, the post includes a bonus video of our cutest kitten yet!)
Earthquake swarm rattles San Ramon, CA for over a month

I expect #Trump has a lot to do with this but the cost of attendance is also surely a factor. Going to #AGU from the #UK costs more than the standard annual Research Training and Support Grant for a #UKRI funded #PhD student - which also has to cover lab costs. AGU is unaffordable for many.
Attendance at US-based science conferences is bouncing around this year but generally down. #AGU25 has ~10k fewer this year! I explored these trends for @nature.com — including solutions to keep conferences local & productive:

I don't even consider AGU anymore.

1) Hostile immigration processes
2) Extortionate cost
3) Size is overwhelming

I only get 1 international conference every couple of years, so I need to choose wisely. I get more out of specialist events. And where I feel safer travelling to.

A follow up with another few days of events. Now relocations of almost 600 earthquakes. These preliminary results suggest the main shock lies on a different fault a km or so SW, with most aftershocks tracing the possible Totschunda-Fairweather Connector Fault. Thoughts, @julieelliott.bsky.social?

Preliminary NLL-SC relocation of M7 Dec 6 #Alaska #Yukon Hubbard Glacier #earthquakes and seismicity since 2020. Hubbard events fall in void in earlier seismicity, show clear SE-NW trend, and suggest main rupture was ~vertical (strike-slip?) at SE and complex or dipping (toward NE??) to the NW.
