Deeply ironic that Adelaide's bid for COP31 has a good chance of exclusion-zoning a heap of their rail public transport.

This is hot on the heels of SA Labor locking in parking minimums!

There's gotta be something in the water...

Going to be rather enjoyable seeing the reactions of those parents supporting the ban of social media for under 16s, discovering that means they now have to prove to YouTube, FB, etc that they are over 16.

"I thought this was just about the kids, I'm over 16, why do I need to provide ID???!!!!!"

A good way to think about the housing crisis is landlords pocketing essentially all the consumer surplus the last 40 years
Between 1980 and 2024 the basket of 50 basic commodities become cheaper and more abundant. To be precise 70 per cent cheaper and 238 per cent more abundant. If we hadn’t messed up housing costs we’d be collectively very well off. Source: buff.ly/U8lZZkc

The Portland area transit service expansion plan that we worked on had just two goals: ridership and equity.

Here are some of the payoffs: New service in lower-income inner-ring suburbs, including a new Frequent line and a new line that has a chance to be Frequent someday. But there's more 🧵 1/

Because by occupying one of the 6 traffic lanes for a period of about half an hour, "people's right to freedom of movement would be excessively interfered with".

So people's right to freedom of movement being completely denied for months without end is fine, but impeding a few cars is a problem.

Never thought I'd see this - and it will likely change with more prepoll and postal - but LNP are below two quotas in Qld right now.

(PHON + Rennick + Trumpet ≈ 1 Q)

So in terms of results it's a 2-2-1-1 like last time, but I have no idea who'll come unlucky 7th

Reading this while I'm preparing to give evidence at a parliamentary hearing tomorrow afternoon supporting a planning amendment bill that does nothing but fast-track public housing and public health infrastructure
You could prioritise public housing, better planning (transport, services etc), price caps, or you could say “it’s just like potatoes, give private developers more power and reduce demand”. Where do you think that ends up.

If an MP were to spend every waking moment meeting voters, that works out to about 8 minutes 45 seconds per voter over a 3 year term.
Have you met your local member this election campaign - or ever?

@australiainstitute.org.au fellow Skye Predavec shows in 1903, a single MP represented 25,000 voters. Now it's 120,000. Any surprise most Aussies have never met their local member? australiainstitute.org.au/post/electio...
Election entrée: Electorates are bigger than ever
In the 2025 Australian election there will be about 120,000 registered voters per elected MP.

A very old Soviet joke, from an especially dark time:

Foxes are fleeing the USSR in droves.
Q: Why are you running away?
Fox: The Soviets passed a new law that they’re going to arrest all camels.
Q: But you’re foxes!
Fox: Yeah, why don’t *you* try proving to the NKVD that you’re not a camel.
If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.
