I must confess I don't love most of the films Catharine O'Hara did but the exception was After Hours. We rewatched that tonight and it holds up very well 40 years later. She doesn't have a big part but she nails what she has.

Finished the Emily Wilson translation of The Odyssey, which was excellent and very readable. I’m told it’s a big improvement over the Fagles translation but it’s been so long since I read it that I can’t say and tbh I think I’ve had enough of Homer for now. (Thx @tracyking.bsky.social )

Catherine O'Hara was so brilliant on Second City. I've admired her ever since. She will be missed.

There is an old word to describe going to a foreign power and asking for their assistance in breaking up a sovereign country — it’s treason.

Reading yet another article about how tourism in the US from Canada has collapsed and it too glosses over the constant threats of invasion as the reason. Canadians are very angry about this.

Got to see the Toronto Sceptres of WPHL beat Vancouver, which was great, really high quality hockey, but the extra rush of the crowd cheering the “glorious and free” line in the national anthem was something else. Defiance of the orange asshole everywhere.

My review of The Piano Teacher (2001):

It is a remarkable piece of filmmaking but so squalid, sordid and deeply, deeply unpleasant that I never want to go through it again.

Saw a 70mm print of 2001 tonight. Incredible the detail you miss on tv screens. I’d never seen the red Soviet star on one of the satellites. Kubrick really sweated the small details
