Well, obviously this should be revisited for the 79th anniversary of David Bowie’s birth
“David, who shall we invite to the wedding?”

“Bono. Ono. Eno.”

“I love you, you unstoppable conceptual bastard.”

The Banh Mi really is an S tier sandwich that is versatile and adaptable to meat eaters and vegetarians and I would encourage anyone who lives/works near one to support their local Vietnamese sandwich shop/restaurant.

The UK is king of the ready-made sandwich, which sounds like a dig except it's very much not

My brother was a chef at a London hotel kitchen and tried to convince me “traditional“ English food is under appreciated by taking me to a place that serves Elizabethan dishes like lamprey pie and kidney tartare, and I must say his gambit did not work

my main problem with the "british food is bad" jokes are that it's old and really dated material. it's not really true, but more importantly, it's hack
'British food is bad' has been untrue for like a generation and a half at this point but really sticks around in the U.S. U.S. supermarkets are inferior to their U.K. counterparts!

Let's talk about generative AI, contaminated information, and rhubarb.

Once upon a time, Europe was at war.

Food was scarce, and the government of the quote-unquote United Kingdom looked for alternatives. 1/

Happy 33rd birthday to the best Trek series ever. Feels like it'd be almost rude not to link to my essays on the show's first season, right?

So Hitler's position in 1940/1941 is not a good position ruined by foolish decisions, but in fact a deceptively weak position that is almost certainly doomed, leading to insane gambles that only make it worse.

The catastrophic mistake was having a war, a result of the worse mistake of being a Nazi.

The Evil Overlord List is an amusing enough read, but I also feel like the kind of person who would become an Evil Overlord would definitely do a bunch of the stuff the list says not to do because that's not the kind of person whose decisions are primarily informed by Pragmatism.

I like to call this the "Goons are real" problem: Some stuff seems unrealistic or like a tired trope to us because we've become unaccustomed to the thing that trope was based on - just like it used to be perfectly normal for powerful men in a community to have (sometimes literal) retainers!

people in stories don't actually choose the most logical or sensemaking things! it's like the Evil Overlords List, we're seeing in real life that real evil overlords do not subvert tropes like "never explain your evil plan" or "make sure your goons have uniforms it's hard to imitate"
