McLane in the first Die Hard is fun because he manages to simultaneously be the ideal power figure for every divorced man (smart aleck, good with guns), but also a deconstruction of that ideal (self-hating, kinda cowardly), and 99% of people who talk about that movie never notice.

True, but also John McLane starts the movie emotionally closed off, incapable of facing his problems. He emotionally opens up after enduring searing pain (the glass), and in the end only triumphs after putting himself in a vulnerable position he actively avoids at the beginning.
