“In Utrecht, the bike is not an end in itself. It is a means to create a liveable, healthy, climate-friendly city for all. The success can be admired in the inner city. It is lively and yet quiet at the same time. Here, it's noticeable: Cities aren't loud; only cars are, and they play no role here.”

STREETS ARE FOR PEOPLE
Bike lanes are like curb cuts. Their story is bigger than the name or initial intention implies. Learn about how many folks, not just disabled people, benefit from curb cuts and know that bike lanes do much the same!

Streets are for people, not just cars.

My walk from the subway stop goes through a few stop signs and it is incredibly rare to see a car stop.
I live not far from a toddler park. It’s within a network of narrow side streets that have speed bumps and daylighting. At the 4 way stop, feet from where the babies play, you can watch about 2-5 cars per minute completely blow through the stop sign. So no, you can’t just rely on structural changes.
Aren't there lots ot structural road changes that have been proven to reduce speeding? I feel like that sort of thing would be more effective than a focus on enforcement. Just on a basic human behavior level

Is your city Bicycle Ready?
I was at a conference where it was noted that many cities are not yet AV-Ready (autonomous vehicles).

I thought this demand was so awful that I immediately renamed my book project:

*** Bicycle Ready ***
How city centers and retail businesses can avoid missing out on the transport revolution.

The problem with PBOT and the city's approach in general to East Portland roads, isn't a lack of attention or investment. It's that the projects they do build are way too compromised (bcuz politics), too sympathetic to drivers, and are lacking in physical protection for bikers/walkers.

In New York City they put the bike lanes on the left side of the road because you want the fastest vehicles to stay to the left.

If every single bicycle in the world disappeared cars would be just as slow as they are today.

If every single car in the world disappeared bikes would be multiple magnitudes faster than they are today. A 40 minute urban bike ride would go down to 20 minutes.

So we moved to Brooklyn this weekend. Went on my first bike ride longer than going around the block today & it was pretty incredible. Perfect, absolutely not. There's way too many cars in general & parked in bike lanes but overall I saw tons of bikes, felt like I was in a bike city & loved it.

This reddit comment in response to the question "is it crazy to bike commute 6 miles?" is exceptional:

"What’s crazy is sitting alone and angry in a metal box for over an hour a day."

So succinct yet fully captures the mental health problem cars create.

If Boston simply stopped trying to appease cars, an incredibly selfish and inefficient mode of transport, it could transform itself into one of the world's greatest cities. The bones are there, it's an amazing walking city, biking is already the fastest way to get around but the T needs expansion.
#boston this should be us. We have to invest in true transformative infrastructure combined with housing and bike lanes. Housing has to go vertical and train lines like this would be generational game changing for our city
Timeline cleanse: drone views of the works of Bologna's tramway that has hit the milestone of 4 km of tracks laid down (out of 16). Target completion date: June 2026.

American cities were not built for cars.
They were bulldozed for cars.

This is what Storrow Drive should be - except even better. We have more space, we put in a train that runs along storrow, add dedicated wide bike lanes, even little coffee shops could dot the land scape so ppl could enjoy the waterfront with a cup of their favorite brew
This could be every waterfront freeway in the USA…

Just stumbled on this picture of me from four years hacking the coffee machine to work after I broke the carafe and it feels like the right thing to share right now.

I think we can change the world by having protected bike lanes and secure bike parking everywhere.

Update: ODOT will not be moving forward with my radically non-radical idea of improving urban mobility by NOT expanding freeways as Director of Urban Mobility. Alas. 😞

Asked AI to estimate what the cost of gasoline should be if we included all negative externalities:

(Costs per gallon)
Tire Pollution: $0.10
Car Accidents: $1.40
Air Quality Impacts: $3.40
Climate Impacts: $10.90
Direct Environmental Costs (Gasoline): $3.80

Total Estimated Cost: $19.60 per gallon

If you're going to complain at least come with facts and truths instead of the bullshit most maniacal motorists spew about bike lanes.

Or yes just STFU.

The solution to poor driving is rocks

Parking on the pavement? Put some big ol' rocks in the way

Are cars going too fast? Cover the road in little bumpy rocks

Street too wide? Big pile of rocks for cars to go around

Need a bike lane? Line of chunky rocks to keep cars away

Rocks 👍 🪨🌳🚶🚴‍♂️

I did some field research awhile back to see how the Dutch do bike lanes in industrial areas and—folks—they're better than the shit we have in the city.

So I applied to this ODOT Urban Mobility Office Director job figuring I'd be insta-rejected but made it past the first screen!

What qualifications do I have to direct widening highways to reduce congestion? None, but neither does anyone else!

But you bet I could increase urban mobility! #urbanism

People think Portland, Oregon is a progressive place that is bike friendly BUT WE TAX BIKES. Sorry for yelling but it's absolutely insane, counter-productive, regressive, anti-bike, anti-climate and hasn't stopped the '“bikes don’t pay their fare share.”' cries.

We need to get rid of the bike tax.
The current tax rate on an entry-level bicycle is 15 times higher than that of an entry-level new car.

Lawmakers say the tax was rushed in 2017 and always assumed it would be modified. The 2025 transportation package might be a chance to do it.
