It's kinda cool that Gary Larson is doing new cartoons because he picked up a digital tablet, taught himself how to use it, and it made him love drawing again.

It's not too late to register for Saberseminar! If you're a student or job-seeker, this is one of the best available conferences to network. Don't just take it from us: bsky.app/profile/nick...

Register here:

Baseball specific:
saberseminar is the best conf in terms of baseball presentations and people interested in jobs in baseball. Literally all teams have analytics representation at sabersem.

Would recommend sabersem over mlb winter meetings for analytics job seekers tbh

Ed is talking about journalism but this is essentially the same advice I give to students/others looking to build a portfolio to break into sports analytics. Do work you find interesting; you’ll do better stuff. You’ll ask the next question. You’re more likely to do something novel or unique.
Don’t think about “doing stories to go viral.” Learn how to explain what you are doing in a way that tells someone why you’re excited, or disgusted, or infuriated, or despondent, or whatever it makes you feel. If you can’t do that, maybe reevaluate what it is you do at your job as a writer.

we're living through a major, civilization-altering technological revolution and it has nothing to do with AI
Just recorded a pod on solar+storage and holy shit y'all, if you are not tracking this market on a daily basis, you have no idea how wild it is. The global average price of a battery pack fell 40% *from 2023 to 2024*. That dropped the LCOE of a solar+storage plant by 22%. In a year!

Gutted to hear today's news that the hockey world has lost Bruce McCurdy. A great writer, and a guy whose love of the game bled through all of his work. RIP Bruce.

Darkly funny that vaccines have worked so well for so long that folks have straight forgotten what it means to catch a real disease that could kill you instead of mildly inconvenience you.

This isn't an exaggeration. Before Cockpit Resource Management became a thing, captains who acted like, and were deferentially treated like macho gods of the skies did things like let their planes run out of fuel or fly straight into the ground, and the other officers were too scared to stop them.
the "DEI pilots" thing is not only untrue, but the opposite of true. The piloting profession in the late 20th century was so dominated by one Guy Type that they had to invent a new kind of training that forced pilots to listen to their first officers so they would stop flying planes into the ground

I had a walk today and thought about the relationship between civility, discomfort, and abuse.

Some of you know that “civility” is one of my hard “ugh” triggers. This thread will explain why.
