Yesterday (September 17) I rushed my sweet cat Jopson to the emergency vet after fearing he swallowed a sewing needle. After a quick initial X-ray, the vet confirmed that he had swallowed it and that it was already in his stomach. Thankfully it didn’t puncture anything in his throat going down, but we didn’t want to risk it getting stuck in his intestines, so he immediately went into emergency surgery to remove both the needle and the thread that tempted him to chomp on it.

I didn’t think twice about opting for surgery, as I think any pet owner would agree with, but the costs of such an invasive and instant procedure were pretty staggering. Upon picking him up today (September 18), I learned that we’d be getting a partial refund, but the final cost is still quite a lot to handle. If anyone is willing or able to chip in to help offset some of the cost, we’d both appreciate it a lot. If you aren’t in a position to donate, sharing would also help.

Day 1: Arrive Late, Leave Early

Originally a screenwriting technique, "Arrive Late, Leave Early" means starting a scene as close as possible to the moment of change, conflict, or plot development, then exiting as soon as it resolves—or during, if you're aiming for a cliffhanger.

Why?
Streamlines the storytelling, keeping the reader engaged and the narrative moving at a brisk pace.

Slide 3: In Practice

This is spoilery but oh well. It's definitely Mireia's most triumphant moment in Book 1 of my #Atlantis trilogy. 😊🔥

Mireia glanced around, and a smile flitted across her face.
“Will you kill this innocent woman, nesu?” she demanded, a new note of confidence in her voice. “This woman who risked her life itself for the chance to fight among Atalantis’s noblest warriors?”
“Let her live!” several people began to holler, and more joined in.
Utepec’s blade was still pointed at [Redacted Hunk Lady's] throat, and his face was contorting with rage. For a dreadful moment, Mireia feared he would kill her anyway, out of sheer defiance. But the thousands of people around the arena were growing increasingly noisy with their protests.
Mireia had to shout to make herself heard: “Why not let her fight?”
“Let her fight!” the people cried out.
“Let her finish the tournament fairly!” she added. “She earned her place!”
The crowd’s raucous yells began to coagulate into a chant that made the earth shake: “Let her live! Let her fight! Let her live! Let her fight!”
Utepec, seeing the people were against him, finally shouted back, “Fine! She may fight. But when she loses, I will punish her as I see fit!”
“And when she wins,” Mireia countered, “you will set her free!”
At those words, the arena erupted into cheers loud enough to be heard even by the gods far off in the Deep World.

He caught Komi’s eye as he stepped through the doorway. He didn’t know if she was the type to take validation from anyone but Castor Baker, but Dylan wasn’t about to leave her out. You could shout all you want at a crew, bark your orders, stamp your authority, but one acknowledgement of a job well done went a long way to make tired minds perk up until the whole job was done. People thought him brash, sometimes unnecessarily belligerent, but he appreciated good work and was never afraid to say so.

“Ai, Mireia!”
She was yanked back out of her sea-trance by the sound of some annoying little human calling to her from the shore.
It was Kena.
“What—?” she started to yell, before a large wave rolled up behind her and knocked the words out of her. She floundered and coughed the saltwater out of her sinuses. “What are you doing here, Piper?”
“Just came to see what you were getting up to.”
“No, but—how did you find me?” There was something unnerving about Kena being here in her private place. “Who told you where I was?”
“Your birthsister, your bondsisters, both of your mothers.” He counted them off on his fingers, then smirked. “You must come here a lot?”
“I used to, yes.” She treaded back toward the shore, but stayed on her knees in the shallows and wrapped her arms around her nakedness.
“I can see why,” he commented. “It’s beautiful here.”
“Would you mind turning around?”
“Why?”
“So I can put my clothes back on!”
“Oh! Ata, sorry.” He turned his back to her with an awkward cough.
