I am a huge fan of massive world building and existential struggles on civilization scale. As such, I will always recommend the Pern series by Anne McCaffrey, and the Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Auel.

Glancing at my profile, I suspect it's time to re-introduce my trilogy!
