I hope so! As it’s my first bit of merch!

Seen lots of comments on The Odyssey trailer like, “The armour isn’t historically accurate!”

But as my Classics tutor once said: The ancient Greeks had no problem chopping and changing their myths, or depicting their heroes in contemporary armour, so there’s no reason why we can’t

Sunday Bloody Sunday was a very important film for me as a closeted pseudo-intellectual teenager
BOTD Peggy Ashcroft!!
Legendary Stage career, but very special supporting turns in The 39 Steps (Hitch) and Sunday Blood Sunday (Schlesinger)

In the @strategyaaron.bsky.social podcast I was on with @aaronhughellis.bsky.social, he made the point that what motivates the modern Tory Party is a deep fear that someone, somewhere, has something that they do need *absolutely* require to live.

This sits...awkwardly with their middle class base.

Rob Reiner: I'm going to make a coming of age drama, a fantasy adventure story, a romantic comedy, a psychological horror and then a courtroom drama.

Us: Across your entire career?

Reiner: In a 6 year period.

Us: That sounds-

Reiner: -Each one will be arguably the best movie in that genre.

The rise of Soho House has really brought home to me how kind of absurd the idea of clubs are now.

“You want me to pay you how much? To do *what*?”
Presumably at some point we will have hit peak grift, and just like the IPO of Lastminute.com marked the peak of the dotcom bubble in 2000, there will be some symbolic last grift that defines it. And I'm calling it: it's the Truss £500k member's club.

I want to read a good, weighty biography of an old-time media tycoon. Constantly tempted to buy Andrew Roberts’ one of Lord Northcliffe.

But also…it’s Andrew Roberts…

What’s Bluesky’s opinion?

New ep!

I talk to Armen Sarkissian - former President of Armenia - about why the world seems so chaotic right now, how politicians should overcome it, and the surprising power of small states.

We also have a back’n’forth over Francis Fukuyama…

Contrary to the “axis of authoritarianism” talk, I’ve long believed that it’s in China’s interests to keep Moscow occupied on its western border with a militarily strong neighbour that is of Europe but not in Europe - and I imagine that’s why Zelensky has usually been very deferential to Beijing
A new free piece. China actually has the great whip-hand in the Russo-Ukrainian war. It supplies the parts which make UAVs for both sides. China could cripple Ukrainian drone production if it wanted. That is real power and we better hope China does not use it. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Harris doesn’t get the respect she deserves
There was a swing toward Trump across the whole country, but it was bigger in the states exposed to very little campaign messaging. Harris presidential campaign messages appear to have been more effective than Trump's. She lost b/c of that general swing, likely caused by economic concerns. /2

I made the mistake of starting The Terror mid-evening and bingeing it till nearly 5am. The show was burnt into my brain
I guess it was a Choice to watch The Terror on the week of the earliest sunsets of the year, but I'm not sure if it was a good Choice, despite how amazing the series was.

It is crazy to me that there was a five minute fanfare over ID cards being the future of the government, coming from nowhere - then we’ve not heard a thing about it since
"The Brexit gambit demands a bold and full-throated argument made over a long period of time." A good piece on Starmer's greatest weakness, an unwillingness or inability to litigate his own case for ID cards, Chagos, assisted dying, winter fuel and much else.

"He put me in a chokehold.....that was very uncalled for" encapsulates perfectly the civilisational clash here. This gentleman doesn't even have the words to articulate the sheer despicableness of what he's been subjected to.
MINNEAPOLIS: “All I did was step outside as a Somali American citizen, and I got chased by a masked person, assaulted, kidnapped. It was inhumane. If this is what’s happening to a 🇺🇸 citizen on camera, imagine what could happen to your loved ones.”

There's no way of comprehending the Trump admin's conflicted attitude to Europe apart from through its own racism.

In the Trump admin's view, Europe's "civilizational erasure" makes it worthy of abandonment. But Trump officials still want to push Europe to reclaim its past racist "greatness."
A classic of the genre
