If this government really were New Labour, all Tory placemen would be pushed out
Robbie Gibb issue is just one case where Labour has left in place people appointed by the Tories : Arif Ahmed at OfS, Kishwer and Reindorf at EHRC. Real self-sabotage.

My opinion of Nandy nosedived when she gave a big speech as Shadow FS criticizing Blair’s Chicago speech and arguing that foreign policy needed to take into account the impact of world events on Britain’s towns (the whole point of Blair’s Chicago speech)
I think she isn't interested. I thought she was pretty good when shadowing Michael Gove, and she is really good around such things as left-behind towns. Her strengths are elsewhere.

With Trump’s return, will authoritarian regimes start being as corrupt and despotic as they want? Or are there benefits to appearing respectable?
I talk to journalist Joanna Lillis about that choice in Central Asia:

It amazes me how oblivious so many on the Right are about Trump basically being a Soviet leader

I’m starting Death by Lightning - but also wondering if I should read Candice Millard’s book first.
Her one about Theodore Roosevelt’s Amazon expedition was one of the best books I read last year.

Re: Bannon’s comments about jail.
I wonder if the politik thing for Democrats to do would be to say, basically, anyone who has committed crimes on Trump’s behalf is - for all intents and purposes - pardoned under any future Dem Congress, White House.
But from this point of forward, they won’t be.

Separate but related, Trump didn’t come out of nowhere - he spent decades as a celebrity influencing American culture
the refusal to entertain at least a weak version of "Trump is how we got Trump" has been a recipe for a decade's worth of bad punditry and bad incentives for public intellectuals. "We got Trump because of some obscure event in the 1600s!" "We got Trump because of [niche voting demographic!"

I would put more money on continuing to harvest infinite energy from the sun over assuming that forcing everyone to use The Machine The Lies To You is the steady basis of an entire economy
A fun question. In 5 years time, what looks better? The US’s enormous bet & capex on AI? Or China’s equally enormous bet and capex on renewables?
China has made cheap, clean energy available in huge quantities. The world should take the win econ.st/4oqFszB
