At this point there's really nothing new to say.

We've been doing this for years, it's aggressively clear. She's the world's most prominent transphobe. Engaging in Harry Potter as a franchise supports her. She has explicitly said that she views that support as approval of her views.
“J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement."

She does. But those views are harming trans people, and JK Rowling should face consequences for that.

HBO Says ‘Harry Potter’ Series Will ‘Benefit’ From J.K. Rowling’s Involvement: She ‘Has the Right to Express Her Personal Views’
HBO supports J.K. Rowling's involvement with the new "Harry Potter" show as the core fanbase grapples with Rowling’s controversial views on trans identity.

Dems should be pushing this hard. It's the exact sort of thing Fox and Newsmax et al will never report on.
#NEW: The House has also voted to overturn the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's rule limiting overdraft fees to $5.

217-211. All yay votes were GOP, 1 GOP plus all voting Dems were nay.

The big banks won. Regular people lost.
ICYMI: The Senate today voted 52-48 to overturn the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's rule limiting overdraft fees to $5. Score one for those plucky big banks and predatory fees!

All Democrats and Josh Hawley voted no.

I wrote about this a bit in my last book but it really shakes me that a defining feature of this catastrophic era is that we just keep going to work. We work through pandemics, we work through natural disasters, we work through economic calamity, we work through coups, we work, we work, we work.

I am a former incarcerated firefighter. I served in a California fire camp from 2009 to 2012.

Misinformation is afire on the internet, so here are facts about the prison firefighter program, all in one place.

A thread.

I will occasionally encounter students and colleagues who think that America doesn’t have colonies, and I tend to remind them of this fact.
Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, DC, American Samoa...millions of people who pay taxes, are plundered for resources, and have no say in their own lives. It's utterly abhorrent.

One thing I think people talking about the threat of authoritarian creep have gotten, if not exactly wrong, not quite right either is to frame discussion in terms of various European precedents.

Those are relevant to be sure, but we also have an American precedent - namely the South before 1965.

I've been thinking about this poem by Langston Hughes recently and although it was published in 1931, it remains relevant as ever.

AOC comes out swinging against a Nancy Mace for targeting Sarah McBride.

"They're doing this so that Nancy Mace can ... fundraise off an email. They're not doing this to protect people. They're endangering women, they're endangering girls of all kinds. And everybody should reject it. It's gross."

One annoying thing about historical research is looking up how long it took to get from A to B in the US by train in 1880 and then looking it up now and realizing it was faster in 1880.
