There are really four levels to what happened last night: US, regional, global and Venezuela.

I'll go through them in that order, as it moves from easiest to hardest in terms of making sense of them.

During Fiona Hill's testimony to Congress on Oct 14, 2019, she described how Trump and Putin discussed exchanging Ukraine for Venezuela. The quid pro quo was if Trump refuses to help Ukraine fight off a Russian invasion, Putin would not help Venezuela (a Russian ally) resist a US takeover.

Yes and it’s why I welcome @billkristolbulwark.bsky.social and @maxboot.bsky.social. They did hard things, admitted hard truths.

It is why I have so much scorn for David Brooks and Ross Douthat and Caitlin Flanagan and those who are still today making excuses
I am A TINY BIT sympathetic.

These kind of centrist white conservatives have spent decades being fetted as the wizened and brilliant center of american politics. The beating heart of sanity and patriotism.

Grappling with your politics being exposed as unpopular and powerless sucks

I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

It's fine to call that an interest of a party. But when a LEGISLATURE, AS POLICY, SEEKS TO AID A PARTICULAR PARTY, that's a blow to the democratic project

The interest of the legislature AS A BODY should be to ensure democratic representation. Not to give some of its citizens more power than others

Probably every country has issues with its health care system, but none of them are moving towards what the US had pre-Obamacare. We can have a vigorous debate about the specifics, but let's all agree the floor is "giv[ing] everyone access to healthcare without fear of bankruptcy."
Every other country does it, Mark. It's not some vague thought experiment.

Lots of ways it can be imperfect, of course, but it fundamentally gives everyone access to healthcare without fear of bankruptcy.
