This is really the only answer. Other solutions have downsides, unintended consequences, or limited effectiveness.

the 2013 immigration bill by the gang of 8 was basically the view of the average American. Got tanked in the House and became so unpopular with the right that Marco and Lindsey had to pretend they never wrote it.

If the files were released in early 2016, what does that do to the race in both parties? Trump might have dropped a few percent in support and maybe that's enough to give a different candidate the momentum to win. Does Hillary also lose support over Bill's ties to JE? Maybe Bernie v Ted Cruz in '16?
