Trump hates Europe’s democracies because they have universal health care, a strong social welfare system and heavy unionization.

He prefers MBS’s Saudi Arabia, where one trillionaire family runs a brutal dictatorship.

What a betrayal of American values!

Impossible not to agree with Warren Mitchell's sentiment.

(Personal comment) This discussion is getting surreal.

The Starmer gov has identified growth as its main priority.

The data suggest that joining the EU customs union would boost growth.

67% of 2024 Labour voters want the UK to rejoin the EU customers union.

But Starmer says no.

The calls from America this weekend to "abolish the EU" are for one simple reason: the EU is the only thing that can keep European nation-states from becoming Russian or American vassals.
The US has declared rhetorical war on the EU
The calls from America this weekend to destroy the EU are revealing. They hate the union because it's the only thing that can keep European countries from being Russian or American vassals.

What I always hear: “We can’t afford to pay our workers more than $15 an hour.”

What I never hear: “We can’t afford to pay our CEO millions of dollars a year.”

Funny how that works.

Interesting what Crick notes.

Farage like Mogg and Johnson are really just grown up versions of their teenage selves. Lots of public school boys leave fully formed - and armed with an entitlement and a sense of empowerment that takes them through the rest of their lives.
On why Farage doesn’t apologise for his schoolboy racism:
“if he apologised, he would be turning to his own support base and saying, ‘You’re all guilty too.’ ”
Exactly.
He is racist. So are his voters. He can’t be pissing them off by saying sorry.

My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why he’s so strong on it: ‘Because we’re always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means it’s not about disliking immigrants. It’s about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And that’s a bad human instinct.’
This is so disgusting.

And nor should it. Farage is a dangerous racist and yet is being fast tracked into No.10 on a ruinous populist agenda, funded by shady right wing money and malign foreign interests.
People must know who and what they are voting for. That’s the very lowest bar in a democracy.

Now imagine Stephen Pollard and the Jewish Chronicle's reaction if the revelations about historic antisemitism had concerned Jeremy Corbyn or Keir Starmer or indeed anyone on the centre/left.
It's a level of grotesque, cynical hypocrisy that I genuinely find quite hard to process.

'Perhaps' does some lifting here but ask yourself what would happen in the right wing media if Chris Mason ever expressed the equally plausible *opinion* that Farage is 'perhaps' the most obviously racist MP since Enoch Powell.
Didn't like this then, like it less now:
The BBC's political editor just described Farage as "perhaps one of the master story-tellers of his political generation".

Do they think they’re doing it so Farage invests in infrastructure and public services? Ffs. Democracy being beaten to death in plain sight.
