Suzong, uneasy and predisposed to trust his new ally, believed the warning. He ordered special attendants posted to watch Xuanzong day and night in the Ganlu Hall, as Li Fuguo had demanded.

Oh Jack, 1. is ok but the rest..
2. Tang Xuanzong "ruled fine for 30 years, then fell in love, led to civil war, dynasty survives 100 years" closest fit.
3. They don't even have vizers/PM in Ming/Qing.
Most Emperors are "non-entity, system chugs along".
There's basically three type of Chinese Emperor.

1. Absolute psychopath, regularly killed the equivalent of the contemporary European population for bants. Widely revered by the CCP.

2. Son of 1, - addicted to concubines, immediately collapses the dynasty.

3. Go master. Poisoned by Grand Vizier.

One of my favorite paintings from the Song Dynasty depicts the Tang Emperor Xuanzong (Minhuang) fleeing Chang'an before the city is captured during the An Lushan Rebellion.

It's a beautiful piece of art with an interesting and instructive story.

wisdom and jest. The saying “riding a donkey while reading scriptures” captures his paradox: movement with reflection, rebellion with faith. When Emperor Xuanzong summoned him for glory and marriage, Zhang vanished instead into the mountains, choosing the freedom of the Dao over imperial chains.2/2

Once inside the court circle, Du Fu tried to exercise the responsibilities of a loyal official. His loyalty to Xuanzong led him to petition for the release of a fellow minister who had been imprisoned during the crisis. This decision angered Emperor Suzong.

By 757, the Tang forces had retaken Chang'an. Emperor Xuanzong had abdicated after his desperate flight to Shu and the throne had passed to his son who became Emperor Suzong. Yet Xuanzong still held a place of authority within the reorganized court.

Du Fu had fled Chang'an during the earliest stages of the An Lushan Rebellion. The rebellion had torn through the Tang realm with terrifying speed. Chang'an had fallen. The imperial household had fled.

Emperor Xuanzong's flight to Shu (南宋 佚名 明皇幸蜀圖 軸)
(c 1150) In 745, after thirty-three years of able rule, the Tang emperor Xuanzong fell in love with the concubine Yang Guifei and became indifferent to his duties. When Yang’s favorite general, An Lushan, rebelled in 755, she was blamed.

On the one hand, yes. court politics were chaotic. On the other hand, this did not have as much effect on the overall stability or prosperity of the empire and the 680s seem to have been the Tang’s most prosperous decade. Also, Xuanzong was not a good emperor. He was a moron with some good regents.

#OTD in #MedievalChina: Li Longji 李隆基 (685–762), Emperor Xuanzong 玄宗 (r. 712–756) of Tang 唐 (618–907) elevates his concubine Yang Yuhuan 楊玉環 (719–756) to the status of 'favorite consort' (guifei 貴妃)—hence her better-known name Yang Guifei. #長恨歌

Yang Guifei (楊貴妃), born Yang Yuhuan, was the Tang emperor’s most cherished consort and one of China’s Four Beauties, praised as the “flower that shames all others.” Her love story with Emperor Xuanzong, however, turned tragic during the An Lushan Rebellion. 1/2

#DOTD: Li Chen/Yi 李忱/怡, Tang Xuānzong 唐宣宗 (r. 846–59). 13th(?) son of Xianzong 憲宗 and uncle of the previous three emperors, he reverses the anti-Buddhist policies of Wuzong 武宗 (r.). Called 'Little Taizong' 小太宗, he is the last capable ruler of the Tang 唐.

From the Qin onwards, rulers made pilgrimages to Taishan. Qin Shihuang performed the fengshan sacrifices there; Han emperors offered jade and silk at its altars; Tang Xuanzong left stone inscriptions on the slopes. 2/3
