By the time Byron and Cora wandered back downstairs, both looking slightly rumpled and extremely pleased, Tennyson was setting out his prepared lunch: salmon cakes with a garlic and dill aioli, a cold bean salad with peppers, capers, and corn, and flatbreads hot from the cast iron skillet. “Is this lunch?” Byron asked, clearly surprised by the spread. “Sure,” Tennyson said, taking the last flatbread from the pan and brushing it with olive oil, then sprinkling the steaming top with sea salt, sesame seeds, and fennel. Cora let out a low whistle of appreciation. “I could get used to staying with Manny just for the sake of Tennyson’s cooking,” she said, snagging a piece of one of the flatbreads and sharing it with Byron. The compliment was just what Tennyson had been needing all morning, and he preened under the attention. “Emmanuel has fuck all to work with in his pantry, and a distinct lack of perishables in his fridge. We’ll have to fix that, probably. But at least I’m good enough in the kitchen to make canned food into a feast.” “Absolutely fantastic,” Cora said, mouth full of bread. “And I’m starved.”

Zedenko looked back toward the rest of the fight. Two more koalions were dead on the ground, with Gallara twisting her sword out of another’s chest. Alakshi’s poleaxe was stuck in the one she’d run through at the beginning, and she was pinning a fifth one to the ground and stabbing it over and over with her spearhead. Jorang had just beheaded a sixth and kicked the seventh one in the face; it broke away from him with a yelp and charged Alakshi while she was busy stabbing. Not okay. Zedenko sprinted back into the fray. Prax dived and jabbed his tail into the koalion’s eye as Alakshi looked up and brandished the spearhead. It reared up to chomp at the impdrake instead, and Zedenko dashed in and slashed right through its throat. “That for you!” he bellowed as it croaked at his feet.

The records did not lie. They never did. They only withheld. Nathan sat at his desk long after midnight, the glow of the screen painting his hands pale as parchment. Census rolls. Military rosters. Probate filings burned in the courthouse fire of 1834. Marginal notes in a priest's ledger, written smaller than the rest. Lord Jeremiah Baker — presumed deceased, winter 1778. No burial location listed. No wife named. No heirs recorded. Just a quiet line in a quartermaster's report: "losses sustained during movement through contested territory." Nathan leaned back, rubbing his eyes. "So that's it," he murmured. The simulation had never shown him the end. The program always faded out somewhere between exhaustion and resolve. He had assumed perhaps foolishly that there was more. There was not. He scrolled again. Another document surfaced, one he had almost missed. Not British. Not Continental, but a translated account, compiled decades later by a missionary who barely understood what he was writing down. It read: "The two spirit warrior did not return from the fighting. His mother spoke his name to the fire until her voice failed." No English name given, Just a phonetic approximation. "Kitchi." Nathan closed his eyes. So they did not survive...
