The underreported story in the groundhog community is the nomenclature battle: some insist in being referred to as woodchucks. Some groundhogs have a laissez-faire attitude about it while others are insisting on uniformity for benefit all such rodents regardless of meteorological forecasting skills.

Right! Lol 😅 I always felt this holiday was a weird one. but, there's no harm to the animals that I know of and I think it is an opportunity to learn about woodchucks and marmots. Animals I think people would take for granted else wise. ^^

At my parent old home, they had a whole family of woodchucks that lived on their wooded lot. They would come and eat under the bird feeder. They were cute.

I still remember the signs the DNR had posted at the long-gone old Gooseberry Falls Visitor Center: "Hi! We're woodchucks. We bite." Apparently, visitors had been trying to pet them and pick them up. The woodchucks were having none of that nonsense.
