rivermade stands near the skating rink of Springer market square, left hand raised to wave at the city webcam mounted on the roof of a nearby building. She is the only human figure in a nighttime scene of a brisk winter storm, bounded by the east curb of market street to the first floor staircase, overlooking the katarokwi basin. The city is festively lit for winter holidays though the uppermost string white lights on the city’s christmas tree has burnt out. The empty skating rink is lightly dusted in fallen snow, as well as the Adirondack chairs, the city booths, their large-scale promotional advent calendar installation and an 8 foot illuminated star with 5-points but presented tipped at an angle that suggests it could have 6 points. The only noticeable colour in the scene is cherry red ribbon wrapping a few city lamp posts, making them look like candy canes.

It shows a young boy throwing a snowball at an old lady, a man in his night clothes getting annoyed at carol singers, and, for some reason, a cheeky chap climbing out of a window. Although many of our Christmas traditions predate the Victorian era, it was this period that came to define many of the beloved traditions that we know today. I'm currently reading 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens and his depiction of a Victorian Christmas is so vivid, with carols, mince pies, brandy-soaked puddings, roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, Christmas dinners, warm family gatherings, awful poverty, and charitable deeds to help people in need. When thinking of the Victorian period, it's easy to imagine Dickens' London, but much of what he wrote about London could easily be applied to Southampton too. The winter of 1890 and 1891 was particularly harsh; it was the coldest Christmas period in decades. The Hampshire Advertiser reported on that year's weather: 'What with the late spring, the cold summer, the hot autumn, and the early and severe winter, ordinary Britishers find themselves completely out of their reckoning. There was no chance of making hay at midsummer, and there has not been much chance of merrymaking at Christmas. A white winter is a very picturesque thing on canvas, and comes in effectively on Christmas cards and in Christmas stories, but there the romance ends. When you have experienced it for about three weeks you have had quite enough of it. The sooner 1891 carries it off the better we shall all be pleased. There had been weeks of freezing weather towards the end of 1890, with snow and ice causing many slips and falls around town. The residents of Southampton enjoyed skating on the frozen reservoirs on Southampton Common but for the town's poor, the severe cold posed a very real and desperate danger. As an Echo journalist pointed out whilst discussing the freezing weather across the whole country, 'a white Christmas is much more in favour of the undertaker. The visitation of cold and fog has been nearly as fatal in killed and wounded as a second-class battle!' Thankfully, there were plenty of people in Victorian Southampton who were willing to give their time and money to make the Christmas season more comfortable for those most in need at this time of the year. Thousands of poor children across Southampton were treated to hot Christmas dinners and given gifts of fruit, sweets, and toys, thanks to the benevolence of kind individuals and various organisations. Likewise, many impoverished adults were able to get a hot meal on Christmas Day thanks to the charitable deeds of strangers and local philanthropists. Town councillors bought tons of coal for the 'deserving poor' of their parishes. Sir Frederick Perkins, five-time Mayor of Southampton and former MP, donated, alongside his wife, Isabella, tea and coal for the widows in the Thorner's Almshouses, as well as oranges and sweets for the children in the local orphanage. Members of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church provided a free hot breakfast for around three hundred people on Christmas morning in a 'well-warmed' hall. The workhouse on St Mary Street was 'tastefully decorated' with Christmas trees and decorations and the destitute inmates were given an 'excellent' Christmas dinner. Their entertainment came in the form of a magic lantern that projected 'dissolving view' scenes from 'A Christmas Carol' onto a screen. The Borough Police Force selected seventy-two poor old men and women they considered deserving of relief and invited them to the Guildhall for a feast of roast beef, mutton, ham, pork, turkey, and all the trimmings. The food had been donated by members of the police force and the public. One of the old men fed by the police that year was over one hundred years old.
