My opinion on the actual Starfleet Academy show is:

I have no opinion, I haven't seen it yet. Since I intend to let my P+ lapse, I'm hesitant to get wrapped up in another series (they got me to sign up for SNW, I must stay strong!)

But if I were in charge of the franchise, I have an idea... 1/2

Every Trek, with the possible exception of Disco and SNW, has faced the challenge of the first few episodes being about characters the audience just doesnt care about yet and writers are still establishing.

Recently when I finished watching Disco and SNW it left me with so much a bad taste in my mouth, there IS a bottom line of mediocre writing, as much as I'd love to just generally blame paramount, there is a fundamental problem is storytelling there that I refuse to believe it's just "executives bad"

I dislike most NuTrek and Alex Kurtzman. I love modern TV. Heated rivalry, Pluribus, Dept Q, The Beast in Me, The Pitt, The Studio. All of these shows are great. SNW had some highs, but ultimately didn’t adhere to Trek’s mission in lieu of dramatics/relationships. And Starfleet Academy is worse.

Poor Scotty! I noticed hes not much of a drinker in SNW, why do i get the feeling Pelia is going to have more of an effect on him lol.
I first saw her in Scrooged as the Ghost of Christmas past. Love that movie!

(Obvs I hope there's more to Darem than a throwaway line; we mostly see him flirting with girls, but I have more faith in SFA than SNW at this point.)
January 22, 2026 at 7:31 PM
Anyway, this ep reveals that Darem is queer and Lura and Jett are in a relationship; SFA has as much queer representation in three episodes as SNW has managed across three seasons.

I don't really buy almost any of the widespread griping about Starfleet Academy because I'm a Trekkie that lived through the initial airings of TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, DIS, LD, and SNW and I keenly remember the kind of stuff people said every time. Never believe the haters, they whine about it all.
January 22, 2026 at 7:30 PM
To add, I think the only other series that did that for meso fast were Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds (but snw might be a bit of a cheat).
January 22, 2026 at 7:25 PM
Oh shit are there actual gays? I thought for sure they'd go the SNW route.
January 22, 2026 at 7:08 PM
man, it's been a few months but I'm still feeling from how bad the SNW episode "What Is Starfleet" is.

that show started well and had incredible charisma for the first year but now the well has been so poisoned by this episode (and Anson Mount's wishy-washy bullshit) that I don't see it recovering
January 22, 2026 at 7:02 PM
Yeah, I don't get that criticism. One of our best episodes of SNW featured the very excellent Jesse James Keitel. DSC had Stamets and Culber in a very normal couple relationship. I loved that they weren't defined by their sexuality - it was just... normal.

im curious about it! i have my gripes with SNW because i feel like it often it leans so heavily on nostalgia while not getting what about the older shows and characters really works. but because academy is a completely new cast of characters i feel like i could get more into it
January 22, 2026 at 6:34 PM
Trek has reached a breaking point in touching the 'Is Starfleet a scientific organization or a military one' idea because it's unwilling to find an answer that disrupts that duality—but I'd rather an ep like this fruitlessly tackle the idea than, say, the nightmare that was SNW S3's documentary ep
January 22, 2026 at 6:11 PM
They might. SNW showed J6 footage.

The first couple of episodes, especially after the first 20 minutes or so of the first, have been embracing the spirit of Trek far better than S3 of SNW did.
