reaching Kowloon in Shenmue II when I was young was life-changing.
this was the part that made me a Shenmue fan. It was the most amazing, lifelike, exciting place I had ever seen in a game, and finding out it was a real place started a lifelong fascination with Hong Kong and China.

As a kid, I always thought somewhere like Kowloon couldn't possibly exist. Those cramped streets, derelict skyscrapers, all those demolished buildings... people actually lived there!

you know what I just want people to appreciate the occasional classy-as-fuck layouts that were in peak EGM
not to mention the GBC right there on the horizon when Pokemon launched- even those games' minimal use of color made the upgrade feel interesting and had a unique branding synergy with the "alternate color edition" release premise.
