In Antarctica, Iervolino et al. confirm high mortality of skuas, showing that even the most remote ecosystems are not protected. These ecological shocks foreshadow systemic disruptions that extend beyond wildlife and into food production systems. 6/11

The year closed fairly out fairly quietly. A typical late Dec arrival of Scandi Herring Gulls at a few W Fife sites. Late skuas at Kinghorn: Juv Arctic on 19th and Bonxie on 21st. Water Pipit around St Mags Marsh until at least 20th.

I did see a penguin fight off some skuas, so maybe

A skua sits perched on a rock near a penguin colony, Antarctica. Skuas eat penguin eggs and baby penguins.

I have once again meme on the auk penguins naming thing but with a twist!!! #birds #Audubon #auk #penguin.

As others have said previously Martin, the most important thing is to enjoy it which I know you will. Different people enjoy birding in different ways. I think a couple of weekend, or longer, stays at Portland will be beneficial if timed well (e.g. late April/early May for skuas etc). Best of luck🤞

3/8 At Berkley Island, the scene is deceptively peaceful.

Weddell seals slumber while skuas soar above nesting penguins. But Dr. Louise Emmerson knows the peace is fragile.

"We know that this is a really contagious virus... it can be absolutely dramatic and wipe out populations."

At Selsey Bill (West Sussex, UK) they give out a Pom King/Pom Queen trophy for the most Pomarine Skuas seen in the spring seawatching period.
I’ve never even seen a Pom in West Sussex.

Skuas! Ok, maybe not my dream job. I suspect the winter storms will have played havoc with your decking. Alas. But there must have been some unbelievably beautiful days?
December 23, 2025 at 6:51 PM
The Skuas there are utter bastards.

Some of the wooden decking that makes up some of the footpath was done by me.

Then again, given that was early 90s, it may had been replaced at least once since then.

well there are also the skuas but their appearance doesn't suit kyouji as much... giant petrels have a more fucked up look (affectionate)
December 21, 2025 at 1:01 PM
As we sailed further south, the variety of seabirds began to increase with Northern Royal Albatrosses, Chilean Skuas, Masatierra Petrels and South American Terns often accompanying us as we headed towards Punta Arenas for a day of land based birding.

It is not uncommon to see great skuas cooporate in the Faroes taking turns to swoop at greylag geese fledglings on lakes - forcing them to duck and dive and eventually exhausting them and then they land on them and drown them. You underestimate great skuas at your own peril!

and the sound of cracking, with just about every piece of ice adding to the chorus. It wasn’t loud, jut there. Common Eider males called and Artic Skuas cruised looking for the first eggs of the season.

I will be doing different things, but the most and hardest work will happen during early/mid June when I will trap adult great skuas to deploy loggers on them and blood sample for PFAS. But there's a variety of other "island ecology monitoring" I will try and set up, incl bird ringing
November 27, 2025 at 7:31 AM
As I'm planning next years field season, I wonder if anyone on here would like to run a small island project on Skúvoy with me. I will be catching and samling great skuas, but there will be good opportunities to investigate other aspects of seabird island ecology 🌍🧪 #seabirds

The Arctic Skua, one of two Skua species covered by the SMP.
Look out for the adult's prominent 'pointed tail spike' and their variable colour gradations, caused by mixed breeding pairs of pale and dark morph individuals! #seabirds #birds @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social

I don't really want to build the ultimate Puffinator. They've enough trouble with skuas.
