The Kent Ornithological Society was founded in 1952. Its aims are to record and monitor the county’s bird life providing both a historical record of Kent’s birds but equally importantly providing data that can be used to help protect valuable habitats.

Another excellent week in Kent birding, a Pallas’s Warbler at Faversham, a Glaucous Gull at Hythe and the Red-flanked Bluetail still at Crockham Hill. There were also high counts of Water Pipit and Great Crested Grebe. See kentos.org.uk for all details. #kentbirding

KOS Site of the month – January
Denge Wood – Tit flocks, Treecreepers and finch flocks including siskins, redpolls and crossbills can all be on the menu in this woodland. It lies southwest of Canterbury and can be accessed from Pennypot Lane. #kentosbirding #kentbirding

KOS species of the month – January
Kittiwake – No longer a breeding species within Kent these medium sized gulls are best identified off the coast in winter by their yellow bill, grey wash over the back of the neck, black wing tips and black legs.  #kentosbirding #kentbirding

The main change over the week was an increase in winter geese with Tundra Bean Geese and White-fronted Geese seen in good numbers. Two Little Auk were seen while two Shore Lark remained in the county. For full details see kentos.org.uk. Merry Christmas! #kentbirding

Funton Creek near Iwade with the right tides can be an excellent site for winter waders, winter ducks and even winter Harriers. A spotting scope is advised as birds can be distant. #kentosbirding #kentbirding
