The several times I have witnessed (attempted or actual) shoplifting they have all been poor-looking people, and usually with clear signs of addiction issues

Perhaps the "aspirational" folk are too clever to be caught (or someone is talking bollocks about motivation?)

If he was getting sentenced on a third offense shoplifting charge in DC he would just be getting out of prison now.

The Mayor acknowledged issues such as phone thefts & shoplifting
"I fully accept that perception...traditionally the Met Police Service was bent out of shape, and weren't focusing on high-volume crime or indeed violence against women and girls. We've changed that"

Met Police and Sadiq Khan hail lowest homicide rates since 2014

Anecdotes satisfy me even less that recorded crime stats for shoplifting.
January 13, 2026 at 12:12 PM
Well if stats don't satisfy you:

It coincides with the fact that myself and everyone I know in London has witnessed multiple, if not dozens of acts of shoplifting in the past twelve months, compared to almost none five years ago.

Look at the many security measures now being taken by supermarkets.

Shoplifting has always been very badly/inconsistently reported by businesses and recorded by police. To what extent do we know this is a real increase in crime, or an increase in reporting, perhaps motivated by difficult trading conditions?

also if the state wants to prove a point they can ruin your life in a way that massively exceeds the penalties one would reasonably expect in any other developed country (Britain is kind of an exception to this category in re: 5 years' custodial sentence for shoplifting a bottle of water etc)

Crime "through the roof" London

Homicide rates per 100,000
London 1.1
Paris 1.6
New York 2.8 (lower than LA lower than Chicago)
Berlin 3.2

The issues in London are phones and shoplifting (knife attacks are down).
London’s homicide rate is at a record low as mayor says it disproves Trump's 'dystopian' claims
London's murder rate fell in 2025 to its lowest level in decades, officials said Monday. Mayor Sadiq Khan said the figures disprove claims by U.S.

Once you know the signs you can figure it out if they're overt enough. I nearly got lost in a sort of McDonald's play space that spiraled up into a reverse chasm I recognized from another dream about shoplifting from a glass & ceramic museum, but I had enough sense not to pee in the cubist ball pit

It’s a multi faceted issue, and yes, the cost of living crisis is one of those factors. The sharp rise in violent theft links to organised crime moving into shoplifting.
Most shoplifting is unreported, so profiling are the volumes.

This evening, loss prevention chased after a customer for shoplifting $60 worth of food and toiletries. She ended up darting away like no one’s business, but not before dropping the shoplifted goods and her wallet with her ID.

Apparently, she kept her wallet in the same bag as the goods.

Shoplifting is a crime of poverty.

You're pointing to a symptom of Tory austerity and failed right-wing trickle down economics, and you're refusing to examine the underlying cause so that you can engage in moral panic.

I always say “thanks”, and then a good portion of the time I’ll get hit with an “I wish mine did that” or a “I’d have to put in so much work to make mine like that” and then I feel like I was caught shoplifting. Earlier today I just said “Yeah mine just happens like that.”

Facial recognition isn’t new — it’s been used for over a decade. One constant: When people get wind of it, they revolt.
