Highly charged The debate around transgender rights, and children being given irreversible medical interventions such as puberty blockers, has been one of the most highly charged issues in politics, society and medicine in recent years. It led to a Supreme Court ruling that “sex” referred to biological sex rather than gender identity, and the independent Cass Review of gender identity services, which resulted in the closure of the controversial Gender Identity Development Service at the Tavistock clinic in London. But stories reflecting the views of people who challenged the concept of gender identity were largely suppressed by the BBC’s LGBT reporters, according to a memo written by a former member of the broadcaster’s editorial guidelines and standards committee. The Telegraph has seen a copy of the 19-page memo, which was sent to members of the BBC Board last month and is now circulating in government departments. It was compiled by Michael Prescott, who until June was an independent adviser to the BBC’s editorial guidelines and standards committee, and sent to executives because of his “despair at inaction by the BBC executive when issues come to light”. It warns that the BBC is not only risking bias in its coverage of trans issues, but is confusing viewers by failing to make it clear that transgender women are biological males, or even transgender at all. Mr Prescott writes in the memo that soon after he started his advisory role in 2022 he was approached by a BBC presenter, a reporter and a producer, all of whom had similar concerns about the broadcaster’s coverage of trans issues.

Doxycycline may impact on schizophrenia risk through its immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic effects (30, 31). Recent research on stem cells derived from individuals with schizophrenia and healthy control subjects showed that administration of minocycline led to a reduction in microglial-mediated synaptic pruning (21), a process that is implicated in the disorder's pathophysiology (i.e., excessive synaptic pruning) and which is believed to be heavily advanced by the time of a schizophrenia diagnosis (32, 33) and can be detected even in advanced prodromal states such as those identified in current clinical high risk services (34). Indeed, there is some evidence, based on neuroimaging findings, suggesting that people diagnosed with clinical high risk syndromes for psychosis resemble people with first-episode psychosis in terms of loss of synaptic density and hypoconnectivity (35). Young people coming to adolescent psychiatric services, however, are typically still far upstream of psychosis (usually several years to psychosis diagnosis) (10), which may be a more opportune time for intervention to prevent aberrant synaptic pruning. Doxycycline's effects on inflammatory-mediated synaptic pruning, therefore, are one mechanism that might impact on schizophrenia risk. As opposed to a direct neuroprotec-tive effect, it could also be that doxycycline impacts upon brain health as a result of its efficacy against one or more infectious agents that might play a causal role in the development of psychosis (36). Further research will be necessary to determine the underlying mechanisms. Doxycycline is sometimes used to treat acne vulgaris, in addition to treating acute infections, which means that the patients treated with doxycycline could have differed from the non-doxycycline antibiotic group in certain character-istics. However, our negative control exposure analyses did not support the hypothesis that the relationship between doxycycline and schizophrenia could be explained by characteristics related to acne treatment.

Stoess joined others in warning that outfits like his likely will not be able to handle the influx of people seeking services, should the benefits expire. He said that while many people pay for food at his church’s restaurant by offering to clean dishes, the number offering to do so has risen throughout the year — and likely will increase even more if SNAP benefits dry up.

While the Utah effort began before Mr. Trump’s return to office, it mirrors his pledge to move the homeless from urban cores to “tent cities” with services. And it accelerated after Mr. Trump issued an executive order in July, calling for strict camping bans and expanded power to involuntarily treat homeless people. Gov. Spencer Cox, a Republican, quickly praised Mr. Trump’s order and told Utah planners to follow it. Much about Utah’s plans remain unclear, including the details of involuntary treatment, what a proposal calls “work-conditioned housing” and whether the residents will sleep in buildings or tents. But supporters call it a model. As the planning for the facility got underway last year, the Republican-dominated legislature replaced the state’s homelessness planning board, which included many nonprofit providers, with a smaller body dominated by political appointees and business figures. It is led by Mr. Shumway, a Salt Lake City management consultant appointed to the role by Mr. Cox. In an interview at his Salt Lake City office, Mr. Shumway, 53, toggled between the language of the boardroom and the pulpit. He said a “management consulting approach” would make homeless services more efficient (“we nerd out on things like Six Sigma and lean process re-engineering”), measuring individual progress through a system of behavioral targets he calls “the pathway to human thriving.” The plan shifts the state’s focus away from housing and toward rehabilitation and moral development. “Success is not permanent housing — success is human dignity,” Mr. Shumway said. “We are in the business of lives, of humans, of souls.” “We can’t brick-and-mortar our way out of this,” he said. Mr. Shumway’s vision would require expanding civil commitment, the process by which a person can be forced to accept mental health treatment. Under Utah’s current law, a judge must find that an individual is dangerous or gravely disabled, and patients have the right to an attorney and to cross-examine witnesses.

End your violent sweeps and fight back against the criminalization of poverty. In July 2021, you posted, “41.18 is not going to solve this crisis we are in. It just sweeps it under the rug. Out of sight out of mind for the council.” Now that you have the power to meaningfully reduce 41.18 enforcement, you and your team have failed to take action, leading to cops citing, arresting, and forcibly displacing hundreds—if not thousands—of your poorest constituents. Councilmember Hernandez, you have voted against new 41.18 zones in other Councilmembers’ districts yet refused to take action in your own. Your complacency led to 41.18 arrests skyrocketing 329% in Council District 1 during your first two years in office, according to data compiled on L.A. City Controller Kenneth Mejia’s website. Instead of repealing the same 41.18 enforcement zones that you loudly criticized your predecessor Gil Cedillo for passing through City Council, you look the other way while cops increasingly criminalize the poorest people you represent. A hope of mine is the development of cooperatives that deliver goods/services in a way that accomodates disabled folks. An existing example that proves it's possible is the Seikatsu co-op in Japan, which is women-led. Goods are efficiently delivered to homes and pickup points.
