As Christmas draws closer, evergreen trees are a happy sight for many. But there’s new research connecting the eastern redcedar to helping spread another invasive species: the lone star tick.

This is from my hike in the Olympics from earlier today. I love all the green, the trees and moss.

"93,546 ha of forest, or ~4.7% of forest area, were damaged in w OR & WA by extreme heat event in June 2021. Western redcedar, western hemlock & Sitka spruce were most sensitive to heat damage, including in old-growth stands where they are canopy dominants." 🌏 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

A2. Neither. I lie awake, listening intently and scaring myself. Seriously, once I lay awake listening to a scritch-scritch sound for hours. It sounded like something pawing at the ground. Next morning I found the culprit: a branch of Western redcedar just low enough to scrape the tent. 🙄 #ParkChat

Happiness is looking up a hike to go on, wondering if you've been on it before, then seeing a picture of trees on the hike, and recognizing the trees. Ah, yes! I have been this way before. Beautiful, majestic trees, how could I ever forget you?

There is something so quintessentially “Pacific Northwest” about a Great horned owl perching in a Western redcedar tree 🙂

Yesterday's forestry pics from Mt. Rainier National Park received a decent amount of attention, so here's another set. The old road is closed to motor vehicles, making for an excellent bike ride!

I think about this whenever I'm on a walk and can smell the redcedar trees

A5. I also love that rotten-egg smell at Yellowstone or anywhere there are thermal features! But my favorite smells are evergreen trees--Western redcedar, Douglas-fir, spruce, Ponderosa pine--and the Pacific Ocean. You can get both of those (not the Pondy, though) in Olympic NP. #ParkChat

Was sneezing uncontrollably this morning & checked Pollen dot com (they have an app, too). We have a pollen situation in New York, “Medium”, the culprits are Juniper (Juniperus), Elm (Ulmus) & Maple (Acer). I should check our local Eastern Redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) staminate cones.
