two light blue and reddish purple composite flowers in the foreground, with half a dozen or so similar but faded flowers surrounding. the blooming flowers have nearly a dozen light blue-purple ray florets with about a dozen or so deep reddish purple disk florets in the middle. these disks would have started out yellow, but have turned red with maturity. a few of the disks still retain their erect split styles, which can resemble the eye of a needle when seen from the right angle. a raceme of well over a dozen blue wood aster flowers, mostly seen from the side. some of the flowerheads are still lively, but most are fairly senescent. the green stems on which the flowers grow are sorta frosty-fuzzy with little hairs. each flowerhead has a pale green involucre with bracts tipped in dark green; the uppermost bracts push up against the bottoms of the light blue-purple rays. above the rays in the center of the flowerhead there is a cluster of reddish purple disks. on some of the fading flowers, the rays have curled up tightly like spools of ribbon. a black, winged aphid is partially obscured behind one of the rays. a blue wood aster growing among fallen tree leaves on the side of a trail through some woods. there is a small rosette of heart-shaped green leaves at the base of the stem, which higher up bears larger, lighter green alternate heart-shaped leaves. at the top of the stunted stem there are over a dozen mostly senescent light blue flowers with purple centers, though a few are still relatively vivacious.

close-up look at a snake plant flower. it has six glossy white tepals that strongly curl back on themselves, tips nearly touching the base of the corolla tube. there are six stamens with long white filaments holding pale yellow-green anthers. a tall white style stands in the middle. the flower grows off a light green erect stem along with many long, thin, pale greenish-white flowerbuds in groups of three or four. a peek into the middle of a stand of tall, broad leaf blades with green banded patterns running across them, where a light green flowering stalk grows. the stalk bears many long and thin, pale greenish-white flowerbuds and a handful of blooming flowers. each flower has six strongly recurving glossy white tepals, six tall white stamens with yellow-green anthers, and a tall white style. sitting on beige carpet in the corner of two white walls, houseplant in a plastic imitation-terracotta pot. the plant has many broad leaf blades, some over a meter long, most of which stand erect though some are trying to go sideways. the variegated leaves are dark green, lighter green, and pale green in streaks perpendicular to the length of the leaf blade. in the center, nearly hidden, there grows a relatively short, pale green flowering stalk with very pale yellow-green flowerbuds and a few blooming flowers.

close-up look at the top of the stem of a smooth hedgenettle, a terminal spike with tiered whorls of decidedly bilabiate flowers, white with light purple stripes and spots, clearly a mint sort of flower. the most central & prominent (& well-focused) flower faces the viewer directly. the top lip sticks out forward, acting as a hood over the mouth of the flower. just underneath it, there are four dark purple anthers supported by white stamen filaments. the lower lip is much larger than the upper lip & hangs down quite low. it is divided into three lobes, lateral lobes considerably shorter than the middle lobe. the lower lip has many purple streaks and patches, darker nearer the top & fading further down until the tips of the lobes, which are pale purple-pink. the terminal spike of a smooth hedgenettle. whorls of white and light purple flowers ring the stem, set in smooth calyces with five pointed lobes colored green and mauve. there are many empty calyces from faded flowers especially lower on the stem, while at the very top there are still some budding flowers. the actively blooming flowers have a helmet-like upper lip, hairy on the top side, that covers four stamens with dark purple anthers. the three-lobed lower lip hangs down and is adorned with light purple streaks and dots. hairy, opposite leaf bracts subtend each whorl on the spike. the stem itself is smooth. a smooth hedgenettle growing uncharacteristically bent low to the ground instead of standing upright. wrinkly green leaves grow opposite on its smooth stem, which only bends skyward at its tip, where it bears a whorled spike of white and light purple flowers. the plant grows among wispy short grass just above the sand on the bank of a wide river. forested hills rise up across the water.

a cluster of over half a dozen small, conical to cylindrical composite flowers. each flowerhead has a small disk of light yellow florets tightly packed at it's "nose;" there are no ray florets, but the disk surrounded by a steep array of overlapping, feathery, white involucral bracts. they wrap around the disk florets tightly at first, but as the flowerhead matures they start peeling away. there are several still-blooming flowers on the near side of this cluster, but those on the far side have faded and their white bracts are opening up. the flowers in this panicle at the top of the stem of a sweet everlasting are arranging in clusters of around half a dozen or so flowerheads at the tip of each stem branch. few of the flowers are fresh and show a spot of yellow from the disk florets at their tip; mostly, that yellow has faded to tan, and the formerly tightly wrapped bracts around the florets are unfurling, taking on a loose, feathery appearance. a few of the flowerheads have fully gone to seed, developing hairy tufts that disperse on the wind. a sweet everlasting, camouflaged in the drying tall grass of a savanna alongside a thin young tree. its lower stem and the leaves thereupon have turned dry and brown. a few leaves near the top (around knee-high) are still green or yellowing. at the very top, there is a panicle of conical flowers. many of the flowers have gone to seed, becoming loose and fluffy.

a raceme of white and yellow composite flowers growing on a horizonal hairy purple stem branch, all facing upwards. there are five blooming flowers and five buds, as well as a faded flower at the end of the stem. each blooming flowerhead has around a dozen and a half white ray florets; on many, these seem to have been chewn down into short stubs. in the center, there are a couple dozen bright yellow disk florets which, when fully open as most are, have five pointed lobes and a bright yellow style with a split end. when the yellow disk florets fade, they turn light purple as can be seen on some of the most peripheral disks on the two rightmost blooming flowerheads. another branch of this frost aster, seen more from the side. many small, green, and hairy leaf bracts grow along the purple stem, which is also quite hairy. there are around half a dozen blooming white, yellow, and purple flowerheads. the rays florets are white, while the disk florets start out bright yellow but turn purple with age. several of the foreheads flowerheads are seen from the side, showing their long green phyllaries which press up against and then bend outwards along the bottoms of the rays. pale yellow styles with split tips rise up from the disks. on the flowerhead highest in the center, the sunlight catches the margin of one of the nearer, dark purple disk florets just right to highlight its three facing corolla lobes. a frost aster growing among dry and browning tall grass, much if which has fallen over into thatch. its stout & upright purple stem is covered in dense hairs; glowing like hoarfrost caught in the sunlight from behind. the stem has broken short above knee-height, but still bears a number of flowering branches each with around a dozen blooming or budding white & yellow & purple flowers.

a close look at part of an airy panicle of pink legume-style flowers. each has a broad upright banner petal with a big crease down the middle, and two small green spots low in the center, mirrored across the crease. the wing petals are held straight fowards, cupped around the pale keel petals which just manage to peek through. half a dozen flowers are visible here, facing in various directions on a slim stems branching off a thicker, hairy, greenish-red-brown stem. a view from a bit further back of the top of a stiff tick-trefoil, a loose panicle of small pink flowers with round, erect banner petals and wings & keels that are held straight forwards. there are around a dozen blooming flowers, with even more budding despite this being so late in the season. no loments / seeds visible, either. a tick-trefoil growing at an angle, leaning to the left, but still approaching head-height regardless. it has a stout green stem coated in fine hairs, bearing nearly-but-not-quite sessile trifoliate green leaves with oval leaflets (the middle leaflet is considerably longer than the other two). the top of the stem branches into many thinner stems, a panicle of small light pink flowers and green flowerbuds. it is growing in a sunny savanna among the tall grass, goldenrod, thoroughwort, and sumac with bright red leaves. a line of taller trees can be seen in the distance, below a clear blue sky.

a spike of tightly spiraling white orchid flowers pointing straight out, away from the stalk. each of the flowers has a green leaf bract at its base, covered in short, glandular hairs. the outside of the sepals are covered in similar hairs. each flower has three sepals and three petals. the top sepal and the two top petals run forward together, while the larger bottom petal (with a frilly margin) bends downward, exposing a patch of yellow within the mouth of the flower. two lateral petals are held forward but slightly apart from the rest of the flower. they tend to curve in and slightly up. three ladies'-tresses growing close together in short grass in a limestone cedar glade, with a patch of bare bedrock visible in the background. the tallest flower spike would come halfway up your shin. low on the stems, there are sheath-like vestigial leaves; the plants' strap-like main leaves grow in basal rosettes and have already withered away. the upper portion of the stems are covered in spiraling rows of white orchid flowers, though those towards the bottom of the spike have already faded. around half a dozen ladies'-tresses growing in low grass in an oasis of sorts in the middle of a limestone cedar glade. beyond the patch of grass there is an expanse of exposed bedrock; farther on, grass, taller grass, and eventually a treeline of dark green redcedars and yellowing oaks. above everything, a sunny blue sky. the ladies'-tresses don't come close to knee-high, but they tower over the drying grass around them. the tops of their flowering stems are spikes bearing dozens of white orchid flowers in spiraling rows. a yellow southern dogface butterfly is approaching one of the flower towers & fixing to land.

a medium-sized composite flower with around two dozen pale purple ray florets and several dozen bright yellow disk florets tightly packed together in the middle. the disks in the very center have yet to open, but those nearer the edge are open. they have five pointed lobes & an upright style, all very bright yellow. towards the lower right, an annual water aster flowerhead in bloom on a branch of an airy panicle near several flowerbuds. the blooming flower is seen from the side, on the plane formed by the pale purple, spread-mostly-flat rays. a profusion of bright yellow disks rise above the rays; below, long green phyllaries line the base of the flower, pale green with a darker green streak down the middle. in the top left, one flower has already developed into a puffy seedhead like a dandelion. an annual water aster hiding within a swampy, densely vegetated ditch, surrounded by thick frostweed stems. the aster's thin green stem leans sideways, branches many times, & bears linear, green, grass-like leaves, and loose panicles of light purple and yellow flowers.

a panicle of small, bright yellow composite flowers on a slim flowering branch of the goldenrod's main stem (blurry in the background). the dozens of flowers each have half a dozen (give or take a few) oval ray florets with a few tiny disk florets in the center. beneath the rays, the involucre are light yellow-green. the top of an oldfield goldenrod, a pyramidal panicle of small, bright yellow flowers, leaning against the branch of a neighboring small tree. the panicle is more coherent nearer the tip, but there are several arching branches weighted down by flowers a little lower on the stem too; the one from the previous pic is on the bottom left & a lil bit blurry. at the very tippy top of the tallest panicle, the yellow flowers are turning brown and going to seed. almost all of the goldenrod-- only the very bottom is out of view! its main stem leans to the right and rests against the thin branch of neighboring small tree, causing the pyramidal panicle of bright yellow flowers to bend downwards where it contacts the tree branch. this goldenrod would be around head-high if it were standing straight upright. for most of its height, its smooth reddish stem bears alternate long, green leaves with rounded tips, many of which have a few little mini-leaves growing from their axils. the leaves get shorter as they go up the stem. the goldenrod is growing in tall grass in a savanna, with many other goldenrods in the background, along with short sumac trees. low.on the far left there are a few light blue aster flowers.

three pale orange to reddish orange round fruits growing on a thin branch, crowned by the now-brown persistent calyces of the flowers from which they developed. the three persimmons could easily fit in one hand. the remains of several well-chomped green leaves share the twig. not pictured: the two i ate 😋. the trunk of a persimmon tree diverging into two branches. before the split, the trunk is about a handspan across, each branch a little thinner. the orangish-tan bark is deeply angularly furrowed lengthwise, with small breaks running crosswise. an american persimmon growing in a thin grove of mostly eastern redcedars at the edge of a savanna. the tree's trunk branches in two at around head height, and none of its limbs run straight for very long. there are many thin lateral branches with green leaves, often weighted down by clusters of round orange fruit.

a composite flower with a cone of many reddish brown disk florets in the center, surrounded by eight large ray florets, oval but with a notch at their tips, colored golden yellow near the base but turning sunny yellow around halfway along. same flowerhead, seen from the side. on top there is mound of reddish brown disk florets. under the disks, the yellow rays spread out flat; a couple furrows run parallel lengthwise down each ray, and there is a notch at the tip. beneath the rays there are hairy, green, oval phyllaries held out to the side. finally, at the bottom of the flower, a hairy green stem holds the whole assemblage aloft. a few orange coneflowers growing among recently fallen tree leaves and grass at the edge of meadow. each coneflower has an unbranching stem with sessile leaves, with a flower on top. the flowers have brown cones in the center, surrounded by large golden yellow rays that turn sunny yellow at the tips.

a medium-sized composite flower with light purple rays and yellow disks. the petal-like ray florets are long, very thin, and numerous-- over four dozen of em. the florets in the flower's disk are least mature at the very center, where they have not yet opened. surrounding those immature florets is a ring of open florets, appearing slightly darker due to their stamen + style. the final ring of disk florets have faded and turned reddish purple. encircling the disk, there is a short fringe formed by the split styles of the ray florets. two aromatic aster flowerheads side-by-side, seen from the side. their stems are thick with spreading hairs, and bear many oblong green leaves also covered in spreading hairs. long, hairy, green phyllaries line the base of the flowers, spreading out to the side or recurving back towards their base. above the phyllaries there are many long, thin, light purple ray florets which are held out mostly straight, though many curve down a little towards their tip. the nearer flower seems to have had most of its ray florets chewn off. the rays' straw yellow split styles are clear to see here, running around the red withering disk florets in the top center of each flowerhead. a few disks in the very center are still holding their styles erect, however. a bushy, mound-like aromatic aster growing under thin branches of shrubs and small trees at the edge of a glade. its obscured stems are hidden within many light green oblong leaves, studded with spiky-looking flowerbuds and a couple light purple flowers with yellow centers.

a close-up look at two small flowers, one in the bottom left and an even smaller one in the top right. the bottom left flower faces the viewer; it has two sets of four narrow, pointed petals, one set on top of the other & neatly rotated π/4 radians. the extremely pale pink petals curve back & are covered in fine, glandular hairs. as for the flower is the upper right, we're seeing it from the side. its short, green calyx's pointed, spreading lobes have partially turned red. there are two sets of recurving petals, one on top of the other. in the lower right there are some green, 2-lobed fruits growing in the persistent calyces left behind by the now-fallen corollas. same scene as the previous pic, different angle. now we're looking at the bigger flower from the side (it is still a fairly small flower though). from this perspective we can see its light green calyx with its pointed lobes, the two sets of recurving so-pale-pink-they're-basically-white petals, the short & dense glandular hairs that cover the inside/top of the petals, and four erect stamens. the green and red branching stem of a diamond-flower, some branches terminating in 2-lobed fruits others with very pale pink double-flowered blossoms with pointed, recurving petals. the background is blurry but there's definitely a gray fieldstone, gravel, and some mostly tan, dry grass, typical of a parched limestone cedar glade in early fall. the diamond-flower has lost most of its leaves; only a few pairs of opposite, linear leaves remain green and present.

a close up look into a panicle of small, bright yellow composite flowers. each flowerhead has a few disk florets and a dozen or so thin & ribbon-like ray florets. the flowers are supported by branching yellow-green stems. some yellow-green aphids with slender black legs are chilling on the main stem. the top of a tall goldenrod is a pyramidal terminal panicle with many small bright yellow flowers. the lance-shaped green alternate leaves on the plant's yellow-green main stem become smaller the higher up they go on the stem. the flowers grow in dense rows upright along the top side of thin arching stem branches. a tall goldenrod, grown about chest high, standing in a grassy savanna in front of a (some?) redcedar tree(s). branches of a nearby sumac are reaching in from the left. the goldenrod's stout, unbranching main stem is densely lined with alternate leaves, green & lance-shaped. at the top, there is a pyramidal panicle of small, bright yellow flowers.

a portion of a sprawling, loose panicle with small composite flowers. they have a little over a dozen relatively short, white, rounded ray florets and around a dozen very pale yellow, practically translucent disk florets each with five pointed, spreading lobea & a tall style exserted through a tube of fused stamens. as the style pushes through the stamens, it dislodges yellow pollen. once the pollen is out of the way, the pale purple style becomes visible. the half dozen or so flowers here are supported by a thin green branching stem with tiny leaf bracts. there are some of the plant's leaves in the background, sorta blurry though. looking at the same racemous panicle of small white composite flowers from the side & a little further back. at the bottom of each flower there are rows of linear phyllaries, pale green at the edges & dark green along their midline until the tip, where the dark green portion expands to fill the full width. the white rays angle backwards, spread well beyond flat; the styles of the disks stick out at angles within 45° of straight forward. a calico aster growing on a mossy creekbank, fallen over and dangling over the water. its long, lance-shaped alternate leaves are largest near the base of the green stem, becoming smaller further up the stem. the stem branches occasionally, with loose panicles of small, white flowers developing mostly on the branches.

a close look at a panicle of small white composite flowers, each with around a dozen small white disk florets, but no ray florets. the disks have five pointed lobes, spreading into an classic star shape, and a long, white, split style. within the corolla tube of the disks, the style is collared by a fused ring of cream white anthers. the top of a branching green stem, each branch terminating in a flat-topped panicle of flowerheads composed of many small white florets with five pointed lobes & a long bifurcated style. a white snakeroot growing in damp soil nearby a creek with a host of other green leaves plants thriving despite the drought. the snakeroot is a little over knee-high and sports broad, opposite green leaves on long petioles. at the top on the stem, there are a few short branches growing in pairs from the axils of some of the upper leaves. thise along with the main stem, terminate in panicles of small white flowers.

a spike of large, tubular and bilabiate, white and pink flowers growing not quite upright in light green calyces, with a focus on one flower in particular, facing the viewer. the downward-curving top lip is all white expect for a blush of pink near its tip, strongest on the inside of the corolla. the bottom lip has three very shallow lobes, and seem best defined as sections separated by small folds, with the two on the outside sitting lower & mostly colored white, while the middle lobe is raised, colored pink, and has two rows of hair growing, one left and one right. the middle lobe kinda looks like a tongue in the open mouth of this turtlehead flower. the flower's four stamens can also be seen within the corolla tube, curving up around the perimeter of the interior space like ribs and joining together at the top in a fused mass of fuzzy anthers. don't seem to be able to see it's style, but in the empty calyx below this flower, the long white style is all that remains after its corolla has wilted & fallen away. a cluster of large white and pink flowers growing in a dense terminal spike. below each of the sessile, light green calyces there are two small leaf bracts; the deep lobes of the calyces appear similar. the flower are tubular & mostly white, only turning pink beyond where the two lips part. the upper lip curves downward and serves as a hood over the stamens and style within; the lower lip forms a raised section along its centerline, constricting the mouth of the flower. blooming flowers occur lower on the spike than the buds above; below the open flowers, there is an empty calyx from a faded flower. a white turtlehead growing on the bank of a small creek running through a hilly forest. the plant's long stem arches out over the shallow stream, heavy with long, broad, oval leaves with many shallow, blunt teeth. there are a few short branches, each one, like the main stem, terminating in a spike of large, tubular, white and pink flowers.

a panicle of over a dozen pale pink composite flowers with no ray florets, just several dozen tightly-packed disk florets with five pointed, spreading lobes and a long, bifurcated style. an aphid is hiding among the flowers. the top of a pink slender-thoroughwort, growing at an angle leaning to the right. its light green stem has occasional reddish patches, and its relatively small, triangular green leaves grow opposite each other on the stem. stem branches grow from some of the leaf axils; they, like the main stem, terminate in small panicles of sometimes just a few composite flowers. the panicle on the main stem is the largest, with over a dozen flowerheads. each flowerhead has several dozen tightly-packed pale pink disk florets with long, stringy, split styles. numerous long, slender green stems arise from a shared base-- or perhaps it is a clump, or a colony? regardless, the stems branch plenty anyways. they ascend lazily, bowing over or resting across nearby bushes for support, growing too long to hold themselves up very well. at the end of each stem and branch there is a cluster of pale pink flowers. the pink slender-thoroughwort(s?) here are growing at the edge of a forest, where a few hardy & tall grassland plants grow alongside low bushes and thin trees.

a light purple flower with five rounded, overlapping lobes, two on top slightly reflexed back and three on the bottom held forward. the inside surface of the flower is lightly covered in soft white hairs, very apparent on the margins of the corolla lobes. a couple anthers can be seen, slender pale pink filaments holding narrow, horseshoe-shaped white anthers; a straight, white style runs between them. on the inside bottom of the corolla, there is a patch of white with purple spots and two light yellow streaks running back to front. a light purple flower with a conical, tubular corolla, seen from the side, facing to the right. the flower's upper lobes reflex back slightly, while the bottom lobes are held forward. the light purple color is strongest at the tips of the corolla, and pales closer to the calyx, which is cup-like but with small triangular lobes. some of the spots on the inside of the flower can been seen through the thin corolla. light purple flowers of gattinger's agalinis are scattered throughout this scene of low grass and the bases of tall stems of other plants in a section of prairie. the agalinis is short, below knee-high; it has a slender, light green, many-branched stem, and many linear, opposite green leaves. it blends in very well! the purple flowers tend to be borne from near the tips of its many branches.

there are two flowers readily visible in this pic, one above, one below, though some of the nearby flowers in their dense raceme can be seen blurry at the edges. these are long, tubular flowers with a cavernous space within their corolla tubes. they are also bilabiate: the smaller upper lip has a single pale purple lobe with an upward bulge near its tip, while the lower lip is more white but is speckled with dark purple spots, with two small light purple lateral lobes and a larger, downward curving center lobe. we are looking straight into the mouth of the top flower, though there's nothing to see within besides the four stamens with dark purple anthers hanging just under the upper lip. on the lower flower we can see the four stamens as well, but also can see its long white style sticking out between the two middle stamens (though from this particular angle we cannot see that it is split veritcally at the tip). the terminal raceme of an obedient plant, densely packed rows of fat, tubular flowers sticking straight out from their shared axis. over a dozen of the bright purple-pink and white flowers are currently blooming, with more budding higher on the stem. visible in many of the flowers are their four stamens which run along the top of their corolla tube then dangle their dark purple anthers just below the tip of the upper lip, and their long, arching white styles with split tips which run between the stamens. an obedient plant growing in a rocky limestone savanna filled with tall grass, goldenrod, beeblossom, et cetera. this plant is nearly shoulder-high; upwards-pointed opposite leaves line its light green stem. at the top it branches into several ascending racemes. one is just budding, but the tallest already has nearly a dozen blooming white and purple-pink flowers. their tubular corollas are set within light green calyces with pointed lobes. after the calyx, the corolla balloons outward, greatly expanding in diameter. the two parted lips at the end of the flower give the impression of a fish fixing to swallow a bug.

the top of a scaly blazingstar, a short raceme with five composite flowers, which have around a dozen or so pink-purple disk florets but no rays. the disks on the top two flowers have faded, turned brown & wilty. the fourth flower is easiest to see & is in full bloom. the color of its disk florets is vivid & their bifurcated styles are comically long. several rows of green floral bracts at the base of each flower are long, pointed, and hairy. several flowerheads near the top of a tall stem, each with over a dozen bright purple-pink, tubular disk florets with five pointed lobes & long split styles. below the florets, there are rows and rows of green & purple hoary, rounded phyllaries that curve out away from the columnar flowerhead. there are two cylindrical composite flowers here, representing the very tip of a terminal raceme. the flowerhead on the left has eight or so blooming florets, bright purple-pink, some with long split styles, others fading. the flowerhead on the right has just a single floret open. this photo shows the base of the flowerheads well: between the flowers' stems and the bright florets, there are rows of scale-like, appressed, green and magenta phyllaries, mostly rounded but coming to an acute point at the tip.
