60 years ago, Kwame Nkrumah wrote about profit shifting draining Africa’s wealth. Today, a colonial-era global tax system still lets multinationals hide profits—costing Africa approx. $90bn per year.

What Kwame Nkrumah knew about profit shifting
From colonial accounting tricks to modern tax havens, Nkrumah understood how capital escapes, and why political independence was never enough.

Musk knows his Starship might land on Mars in 30 years. But there's no profit there as @neildegrassetyson.com points out. By getting Trump to install Isaacman at NASA, $BILLIONS begin pouring in to SpaceX immediately. Shifting his focus to the moon. Right.
I wrote a sonnet about the Moon as the initial focus.

Load shifting and improving energy efficiency could reduce the need for new power plants, but utilities profit more from building than saving power.

The US doesn't need to generate as much new electricity as you think
Greater energy efficiency and load shifting could help meet rising electricity needs at a fraction of the cost of building new power plants.

🚨 Our New research shows ending corporate profit shifting would raise $700B+ annually.

We're bringing these reforms to UN negotiators currently drafting a Global Tax Convention.

The wealth exists. Time to claim it. 🌍💪

Domestic population. In fact, she's really saying the quiet part out loud. This service, this sector, on which we rely to advance our personal ambitions and to move society forward through knowledge, now serves primarily as an engine of profit, we are comfortable shifting that economic burden (4/)

But that is not how it works in valuation models.

No matter how look at it, Amazon is taking on significant risks. It can bear those risks, but I'm not sure the equity valuation can be defended while these investments are ongoing.

The profit pool is shifting from mega tech to infrastructure.

Yeah I mean definitely in this moment rn it is. Again I think this shit sucks I also hear these conversations happening though and the industry Is shifting in this direction. Companies are profit-driven to the extent they're willing to (on average) sacrifice quality by overworking senior staff -

It's also true that experienced executives and managers have also been ruined by the very rapidly shifting business and internet environment. The sad fact is that pretty much everyone running a for-profit news biz seeking a large audience has been ruined or is headed there, save the New York Times.
Its both true that the media business, which is what the news fundamentally is, is a very difficult business to run and to be successful, but its also an industry where companies executives and managers have been ruined upon entry because they tried to give the public something they didn't want

Hmmm. I wonder what other, much easier ways there could be to return billions of dollars to the government's purse.

Removing fossil fuel subsidies, maybe? Charging mining royalties properly? Outlawing profit shifting, perhaps? Taxing the wealthy?

Not because boring is trendy.
Because boring is PROFITABLE.

And profit never goes out of style.

High residential rates square with a known IOU profit strategy: attracting price-sensitive large industrial customers via artificially low prices. By shifting the cost burden to residents, utilities expand their rate base and juice profits.

Crypto Funds Bleed $1.80 Billion As Metals Rally Heats Up
This week, investors exhibited caution, leading to outflows from spot crypto ETFs due to profit-taking and shifting investment strategies. US-based spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced approximately $1.50 billion in outflows, while spot Ether ETFs saw around $327 million leave. These rapid fluctuations demonstrate the swift movement of capital within the crypto market. The market saw a significant $840 million inflow into Bitcoin ETFs on January 14, followed by investors using it to take profits. Gold and silver initially rallied to new highs before experiencing a sharp decline, impacting investor sentiment. Bitcoin and Ether prices saw considerable losses, with Bitcoin falling about 6.50% and Ether dropping about 8.90%. Market movements were often influenced by short-term reactions, margin calls, and headline-driven trading. Large ETF flows have often pushed prices up, while outflows coincide with volatile days where traders are quickly closing positions. Some analysts believe the current pullback is temporary, emphasizing historical performance and long-term trends. Other analysts believe sustained ETF demand could propel Bitcoin prices upward over time. These diverse perspectives highlight the varying focus on immediate market activity versus long-term growth.

2/ 💡 What is it? A system where #multinational profits are allocated across countries using observable factors like sales, payroll, or assets.

The goal is to anchor taxing rights in real economic activity and curb profit-shifting strategies.
